Almuñecar is gearing up for a dazzling Christmas season, and the official kickoff is slated for Friday, December 5th, with the grand Christmas lights switch-on. Mark your calendars for 7:30 p.m., because that's when the Plaza del Mercado and the area around the Aquarium will be transformed into a winter wonderland.

But hold on, the festivities actually start even earlier. A Christmas parade will wind its way through the streets beginning at 6:30 p.m., starting from the Colegio Virgen de la Antigua, a familiar landmark near the town center. This isn't just any parade; it's going to be led by the "Star of Christmas" herself, accompanied by dancers from Escuela de Danza Solange Janssen, beloved children's characters, and a vibrant musical accompaniment. The parade will culminate right at the Plaza del Mercado, setting the stage for the big illumination.
And what's Christmas without a little something to nibble on? Following the lighting of the Christmas lights and the unveiling of the giant Christmas tree, attendees are in for a treat. Think warm, crispy buñuelos and steaming hot chocolate – the perfect way to ward off the December chill and get into the festive spirit. I can almost smell them already!
But Almuñecar isn't the only town celebrating. La Herradura will also be lighting up its Christmas displays on the same evening, December 5th. While the exact time and location are still under wraps (keep an eye on local announcements, folks!), you can be sure it will be a sight to behold.
The entire festive calendar is jam-packed. Get ready for Papa Noel (Father Christmas) to parade through the streets on December 23rd. On December 26th, kids can hand-deliver their wish lists to the Royal Postman, who's collecting letters for the Three Kings. For the athletically inclined (or just those looking for a laugh), there's the San Silvestre fun run – an end-of-year mini-marathon – also on December 26th. From December 27th to early January, "Mundo Mágico," a Christmas experience, will be open daily in La Herradura. And don't forget the Charity Christmas market, running until December 8th.
December 6th is especially busy: chocolate and churros in the afternoon, a traditional flamenco-style "zambomba" street celebration, the Papa Noel parade, a local artists' gala, a children's Christmas carol competition, and a Christmas concert. The New Year Concert is on January 3rd. And in a first, La Herradura is hosting its own San Silvestre race!
Throughout December, expect street entertainment, Christmas concerts (including rociera music in El Majuelo park – a personal favorite!), family shows at the Casa de la Cultura, and the arrival of the Bethlehem Peace Light. Most events are free and will be held outdoors or in public venues. A word to the wise: keep an eye on local noticeboards and social media for any last-minute schedule adjustments, especially for La Herradura events.
The Christmas lights will shine bright every evening until after Three Kings Night on January 5-6, 2026. It's going to be a magical few weeks, so get ready to soak it all in!
