Murcia, Spain – Forget the Grinch, Murcia just got a whole lot more festive! The city officially kicked off the Christmas season in dazzling style yesterday, November 28th, 2025, with a little help from a Hollywood legend. Yes, folks, Richard Gere was in town to light up Murcia's Great Christmas Tree, and trust me, it was quite a sight.

Plaza Circular was absolutely packed. From what I could see in the crowd, it wasn't just locals, either. Loads of international families who call this region home turned out, eager to soak in the Spanish Christmas spirit. And who could blame them? The atmosphere was electric, everyone buzzing with anticipation.
And when the switch was flipped? Wow. The tree, already impressive in size, exploded with light. We're talking hundreds of thousands of LEDs, huge, sparkly ornaments, and this enormous, luminous heart perched right at the top. But it didn't stop there! Think lasers, pyrotechnics, even artificial snow falling from above. They even had 65 high-powered light cannons projecting a massive, shimmering tree shape that was visible for miles. A friend who lives a couple of kilometers away said she could see it clearly from her balcony!
But Gere's visit wasn't just about Christmas lights, which, let's be honest, is a refreshing change from some celebrity appearances. Earlier in the day, he made a trip to the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca. He joined Fundación Aladina in laying the first stone for a brand new pediatric gym. It's going to be a specially designed space for children undergoing cancer treatment, offering rehab areas, private rooms, and all sorts of support spaces. A truly worthwhile cause, and a great way to use a bit of star power, I think.
Word on the street was that Gere's wife, Alejandra Silva, would be joining him, but he ended up attending solo. Still, the focus remained squarely on the kids and the fantastic work that Fundación Aladina does. During the lighting ceremony itself, children presented this illuminated heart that was then raised above the crowd. It was a genuinely touching moment, a symbol of unity and hope – exactly what Murcia is aiming for with their 2025 Christmas campaign, appropriately titled “Una Navidad para la Historia” (“A Christmas for the History Books”).
For many of the expats I spoke with, this event was a perfect introduction to Spanish Christmas traditions. The combination of community spirit, the international flair, the cultural performances, and the charitable element made for a really memorable evening. It’s safe to say Murcia has set the bar pretty high for Christmas celebrations this year.
