Eagles Soar with New Pitcher, Reunion with Fan Favorite
Eagles SHOCK Signing! Hernandez In, Perlaza Return...
The Hanwha Eagles are making moves, folks! Fresh off a strong 2025 season that saw them reach the Korean Series (though ultimately fall short), the team is clearly committed to building a roster capable of going all the way. They've just announced the signings of two Venezuelan players: right-handed pitcher Wilkel Hernandez and outfielder Yonathan Perlaza. And Perlaza's return? Well, that's sure to get the fans buzzing.
Let's talk about Hernandez first. He's inked a one-year deal that could reach $900,000. Not bad for a guy who hasn't yet tasted the majors. The 26-year-old comes to the Eagles with a solid resume from the Detroit Tigers' Triple-A system. In 2025, he went 3-7 with a 4.80 ERA, logging a decent 114 1/3 innings. His minor league career shows a workhorse – 152 appearances, 124 starts, and a respectable 4.07 ERA. The Eagles are clearly hoping he can translate that potential into KBO success. It's a gamble, sure, but one that could pay off big time if he finds his groove here.
Now, for the return of Yonathan Perlaza! This is the news I think Eagle's fans are *really* excited about. He's back after a great 2024 season in the KBO, where he batted .275 with 24 homers and 70 RBIs. The guy can clearly swing the bat. His new contract is worth up to $1 million. What's even more impressive is that Perlaza, in 2025, absolutely crushed it for the El Paso Chihuahuas, San Diego's Triple-A team. He hit .307 with 19 home runs and a whopping 113 RBIs. They even awarded him team MVP honors. So, yeah, he's coming into the 2026 season with a lot of momentum.
Perlaza is expected to fill the foreign batter slot, replacing Luis Liberato. KBO teams can sign up to three foreign players, with a max of two pitchers and, starting in 2026, an Asian or Australian player. The Eagles already snagged Taiwanese pitcher Wang Yan-Cheng to fill that quota, so they're strategically filling their roster needs. Smart move.
The Eagles are also trying to maintain their pitching dominance from the past year. Cody Ponce and Ryan Weiss were quite the dynamic duo in 2025. Ponce had an unbelievable season. He actually won the league MVP. But, with Ponce possibly heading back to the MLB, the Eagles acted swiftly to get Hernandez in as a foreign-born starter. Will Hernandez be the next Ponce? Only time will tell, but you can see what the Eagles are trying to do. Keep the winning formula going. I'm personally curious to see how these new additions integrate into the team dynamic. The 2026 season is shaping up to be a good one, that's for sure.
