Well, folks, you just can't make this stuff up. The Egg Bowl – that annual, deeply personal, and sometimes downright bizarre rivalry game between Ole Miss and Mississippi State – has already delivered a pre-game curveball that's got everyone scratching their heads. Apparently, someone got a little too enthusiastic about their team's chances.
Ole Miss QB's Jersey STOLEN Before Egg Bowl?! What...
Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin revealed that starting quarterback Trinidad Chambliss had his jersey pilfered from the locker room. And not just misplaced, mind you, but straight-up stolen in the wee hours of the morning, around 3 a.m. ET, according to ESPN. I mean, who does that?
Kiffin, ever the master of the soundbite, confirmed the incident, adding that they know how it went down thanks to, get this, locker room security cameras. Yes, apparently, even college football teams need to keep a close eye on their equipment these days. You can't blame them, really. This kind of thing just goes to show you the lengths people will go to for a win, especially in a rivalry like the Egg Bowl.
Now, I'm no detective, but it's not exactly rocket science to figure out where the finger-pointing is headed. The assumption, of course, is that some overzealous Mississippi State fan – fueled by Thanksgiving leftovers and rivalry-fueled passion – thought that knocking Chambliss out of the game by stealing his jersey would give their Bulldogs an edge. After all, no jersey, no play, right? A rather simple, if somewhat deranged, logic.
Chambliss, a senior transfer from Ferris State, has been a crucial part of the Rebels' success this season. He's racked up impressive stats – 2,657 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, a solid passer rating, and even contributed on the ground with 444 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Losing him, even for a game, would be a serious blow to Ole Miss's playoff aspirations. Speaking of which, a win in this Egg Bowl would almost guarantee the Rebels a spot in the College Football Playoff – a first for the program.
Beyond the Egg Bowl drama, there's the usual Lane Kiffin speculation swirling around. Rumors persist about him potentially taking the head coaching job at LSU, which recently parted ways with Brian Kelly. Since Kiffin took the helm at Ole Miss in 2020, he's built a strong program, and his name is naturally going to be mentioned in connection with big openings. But for now, he’s focused on the Egg Bowl – and making sure all his players have their jerseys.
The Egg Bowl is always wild, but this year feels extra charged. Stolen jerseys, playoff implications, coaching rumors… It's a recipe for a truly memorable game. Let's just hope that the shenanigans stay off the field once the game gets underway. Although, knowing this rivalry, anything is possible.
