Okay, *Hollow Knight: Silksong* fans, breathe a sigh of relief (or maybe a frustrated groan of continued anticipation). Team Cherry has officially confirmed they're *still* working on new content for the critically acclaimed, and long-awaited, sequel. Yes, the game that finally dropped in September is, according to the developers, far from "finished." The catch? They’re keeping those cards very close to their chest, naturally.
Silksong Still Alive?! Team Cherry's Cryptic Updat...
Team Cherry co-founder Ari Gibson told Bloomberg, "We didn't plan seven years for *Silksong*. Not that we expect to take an excessive amount of time, but we still are pursuing the same development philosophy, which sometimes can expand our timeframe." Which, let's be honest, is developer speak for "It'll be done when it's done." Still, the transparency is appreciated.
Remember that *Silksong* started as humble DLC for the original *Hollow Knight*, didn’t it? That’s wild! Now it's a whole standalone title! It leaves you wondering, what could this new content *be*, and could it end up ballooning in scope just like *Silksong* itself did? I mean, I wouldn't complain, but my backlog *would*.
Bloomberg threw out the tantalizing prospect of DLC centered around the Steel Assassin Sharpe, that shadowy figure teased years ago but ultimately cut from the final release. I remember seeing the concept art for that guy – very cool. Apparently, Team Cherry hasn’t forgotten about him either.
"Just waiting in the wings," Gibson said of Sharpe. "Waiting to arrive is probably the best way to say it. One of those enemies, a little suite of Sharpe and their companions, they got tucked away for a while because the game had so much in it. And all of these pieces need polish, and polish takes time. We're excited to reintroduce Sharpe. We just have to get to them."
He added that they intend to "deliver on all of our obligations," but also have "our own ideas for extra things that could be added to the world. We're trying to juggle when that could potentially be." It sounds like they are thinking about the smaller *Lifeblood* update, and the larger *Godmaster* and *Grimm Troupe* content packs from *Hollow Knight* as models for future updates to *Silksong*.
When asked if Team Cherry plans on shortening development cycles for future projects, co-founder William Pellen stated, "At the start of *Silksong*, and at the start of *Hollow Knight*, we had no conception it would take as long as it did for either game… We started to work on the basic idea of it, and allowed it to grow as much as we wanted it to. We could've stopped that from growing if we'd wanted to. I imagine we'll go on to the next game, again with that core idea and begin exploring it and start to suss out what the boundaries will end up being." So, basically, no promises there either. They want to explore the idea and not be constrained by arbitrary timelines, which is fair enough, in my opinion.
Information is expected "soon," though a specific timeframe was (predictably) not provided. They *did* promise more frequent communication as they have more to share, which is good to hear. Gibson summed it all up nicely: "Yes, we're continuing to work on the game, we're pursuing the things that excite us." And honestly, that's all we can ask for. Let's hope we hear more soon. Our five-star review of *Hollow Knight: Silksong* described it as "pretty and charmingly mean-spirited, this is a game filled with revelations and genuine personal
