M64 Console SHOCK! Retro Gamers Stunned By New Hardware Reveal!
Gaming News 28 November 2025

Okay, retro gaming fans, get ready to dust off your cartridges! ModRetro, the folks behind that slick ModRetro Chromatic handheld, have finally pulled the curtain back on their modern take on the Nintendo 64. And, let me tell you, it’s a looker.

M64 Console SHOCK! Retro Gamers Stunned By New Har...

Dubbed the M64, this console is clearly inspired by the iconic N64, but it's not just a straight-up clone. The biggest visual difference? A completely translucent plastic shell. Seriously, you can see right into the guts of the machine. It's a bold move, and I personally think it gives it a really cool, almost futuristic vibe while still paying homage to the original. You've still got the four front-facing controller ports, that big ol' power button, a menu dial (wonder what that does?), and, of course, the all-important cartridge slot. Yes, that’s right – original N64 games are welcome here.

And what about the controller? Well, it's another take on the N64's famously… unique trident design. You've got your face buttons, D-pad, and that central thumbstick that either you loved or hated. The controller itself sports a translucent top half, mirroring the console, paired with a solid gray bottom. It definitely looks like they're aiming for a blend of retro aesthetic with a modern touch. It’s a risky design, but I’m curious to see how it feels in hand. I spent countless hours with the original N64 controller, so this new iteration has some big shoes to fill.

ModRetro's clearly aiming for authenticity here, just like they did with the Chromatic. The M64 utilizes an FPGA (field-programmable gate array) to replicate the N64's inner workings. For those not in the know, FPGAs are generally considered the gold standard for retro console recreations, delivering a much more accurate experience than emulation. This means you can expect a faithful recreation of those classic titles, all in glorious HD via HDMI on your modern TV. No more blurry messes!

The timing is interesting, to say the least. This reveal comes on the heels of Analogue's 3D console, another modernized N64. However, Analogue's price has jumped to $270 thanks to those pesky tariffs. ModRetro is aiming to undercut them with a $200 price tag when pre-orders go live. That's a significant difference, and it could make the M64 a very attractive option for retro gamers on a budget. It will be interesting to see which console comes out on top. I know I’ll be watching this space closely. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go find my copy of *Ocarina of Time*…
