RPG Developers Stunned! Our Game Was NEVER Meant to Be a Hit?!

Sometimes, the biggest surprises come from the smallest packages. That's certainly the case with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the turn-based RPG that's taken the gaming world by storm. Even the developers at Sandfall seem a bit stunned by its success. I've seen plenty of games come and go, but the genuine surprise radiating from the team behind this one is actually quite refreshing.

The director of Clair Obscur has admitted that while they always thought the game had something special, they never anticipated this level of adoration. "It's a weird feeling when you put your heart out into the world and the world embraces it and gives you so much love back," the director said in a recent interview. "We get so much love from the players... it's so touching and incredible that it's very hard to explain." It’s a sentiment that speaks volumes about the connection between creators and their audience, something that's often lost in the corporate shuffle of the AAA gaming world.

Ben Starr, the voice actor for Verso in the game, echoed this sentiment with a touch of incredulity. "It was never intended to be as big as it is. It's turned into this kind of cultural moment, phenomenon, but that's just because the game is very honest, I think. And a lot of people have bought into that." He went on to paint a picture of bewildered developers messaging each other, collectively thinking, "this is just silly. This is just silly now. Everyone just stop." That kind of raw honesty is something you don’t often hear.

Launched on April 24th across PC and consoles, including a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 quickly garnered critical acclaim. IGN's 9/10 review hailed it as a "modern RPG classic," drawing comparisons to beloved titles while highlighting Sandfall's unique understanding of what makes those games so special. They essentially took the best bits and made them their own. That’s a compliment any developer would covet.

Fast forward five months, and the game has sold a staggering 5 million copies. It's not just a commercial success; it's a cultural phenomenon. The Game Awards nominations are proof positive, with a record-breaking 12 nods, including Game of the Year, Best Direction, and Best Narrative. Even the performances are getting recognized, with three voice actors in contention for Best Performance. Not bad for a game that "wasn't supposed to be big," right? Personally, I think it deserves every bit of the praise it's receiving.
