Walkathons for Water: Community Steps Up to Tackle Global Water Crisis
💧Thirsty for Change? Walkathons Making Waves for C...
Sometimes, the most powerful actions are the simplest. This November, over 500 people in Mijas and Benalmádena, Spain, laced up their walking shoes for a vital cause: raising awareness and funds for global water scarcity. The annual Walkathons, now in their third year, proved once again that collective effort can make a tangible difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
The symbolic five-kilometer walks represent the daily distance that millions around the world must trek to access water, often water that isn’t even safe to drink. It’s a staggering thought, isn’t it? To think that something we so easily take for granted is a daily struggle for so many. The walks weren't just for adults; over 160 students and teachers from Colegio Mariana Pineda in Benalmádena participated, turning the event into an educational experience as well. They also participated in workshops and activities designed to highlight the importance of clean water. It's fantastic to see young people getting involved and learning about these critical issues.
“This beautiful initiative opened the eyes and hearts of our students," said Virginia Ledesma, a teacher at the school. "They now understand that many children live without access to clean water – a reality completely different from their own.” That quote really hit home for me. It underscores the importance of exposing children to these realities so they can grow up with a sense of global citizenship and a commitment to helping others.
And it wasn’t just the schools getting involved. Mercedes Pérez, who is responsible for the resort’s supermarket, highlighted the emotional impact of the event. “Seeing the children’s joy was moving. The dedication of the resort team, led by Alexandra Barham, to promote responsible water use throughout the year is remarkable.” It's this kind of community spirit that truly makes a difference.
Beyond raising awareness, the Walkathons had a direct financial impact. This year, the event raised more than €2,600. These funds will be used to support crucial water and sanitation projects in Dhone Mandal, Nandyal district, India, and Los Moreneros, Colombia. These projects will improve access to clean water for thousands of people, fundamentally changing their lives for the better.
Carlos Garriga, director of the We Are Water Foundation, expressed his gratitude to all participants and Hilton Grand Vacations for their commitment. “Thanks to everyone involved, we have driven an initiative that changes the lives of thousands who lack access to this essential resource. The funds raised and awareness generated reflect both society’s generosity and determination to make a real difference.” It’s encouraging to see companies and organizations stepping up to take responsibility for global issues, and this initiative serves as a great example of what can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.
