The situation is so dire that the government was forced to shut down offices and schools on Friday, according to the Associated Press. I can only imagine the sense of unease and fear gripping the country right now. These persistent downpours, which have battered Sri Lanka for the past week, have overwhelmed homes, submerged fields, and turned roads into rivers. The resulting landslides have only compounded the misery, cutting off communities and hindering rescue efforts.

Key roads have become impassable due to overflowing rivers and reservoirs, while debris, mud, and fallen trees have created further blockages. Even railway lines haven’t been spared, with some sections completely submerged, forcing authorities to suspend passenger train services in many areas. It’s a logistical nightmare trying to get aid and assistance to those who desperately need it.

The central tea-growing district of Badulla appears to have been one of the hardest hit areas. A heartbreaking 21 fatalities were reported overnight after a massive landslide buried homes, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has confirmed. Four more deaths occurred in the neighboring district of Nuwara Eliya, and sadly, casualties have been reported from all corners of the country. According to AFP, over 1,800 families have been displaced and are now sheltering in temporary camps. It's a scene of utter devastation.

Social media is flooded with harrowing footage showing homes being swept away by the raging waters. The military and navy are working tirelessly, deploying helicopters and boats in a desperate attempt to rescue stranded residents. Even students haven't been spared, with Advanced Level exams postponed amid the chaos, the BBC reports. This is impacting every aspect of life in Sri Lanka.

The timing couldn't be worse. Sri Lanka is currently in the throes of its northeast monsoon season, and to make matters even more complicated, Cyclone Ditwah has formed off the island's eastern coast. The cyclone, thankfully, is projected to move towards India, but it has undoubtedly exacerbated the already precarious situation. The rising river levels have prompted the DMC to issue urgent warnings, urging residents in low-lying areas, including Colombo, to seek higher ground. It’s a race against time.

The Irrigation Department has issued a red-level flood warning for the Kelani River valley for the next 48 hours, a critical period for the region. The Met Office is forecasting more heavy rainfall, with some central and northern regions expected to receive over 200 mm of rain on Friday. The DMC, according to the BBC, has deployed approximately 20,500 army personnel nationwide to assist in the ongoing rescue and relief operations. Let's hope their efforts can bring some solace to the people of Sri Lanka during this incredibly difficult time.
