FORT MYERS, Fla. – Michigan State isn't messing around this year. The No. 11 Spartans stamped their authority all over the court Thursday, delivering a convincing 74-58 beatdown to No. 16 North Carolina in the Fort Myers Tip-Off. It was a statement win, plain and simple, showcasing MSU's depth and defensive tenacity.
MSU Survives UNC Thriller! What Will Happen Next?!
Jeremy Fears Jr. orchestrated the Spartan offense with masterful precision, dropping 19 points and dishing out seven assists. If you've been following college hoops, you already know Fears is a walking highlight reel, currently leading the nation in assists with an insane average of over 10 per game. But it wasn't just a one-man show. Carson Cooper chipped in 14 points, Cam Ward added 11, and Jaxson Kohler muscled his way to a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Talk about a balanced attack!
North Carolina, now 6-1 after the loss, had a tougher time finding consistent offense. Caleb Wilson led the Tar Heels with 18 points, while Henri Veesaar managed 13 and Luka Bogavac contributed 11. But as a team, they just couldn't get their shots to fall, hitting only 38% from the field (21 of 55). That's not going to cut it against a team as disciplined as Michigan State. They particularly struggled from beyond the arc, sinking only 4 of 23 attempts. MSU, on the other hand, was efficient from deep, connecting on 5 of their 10 three-point attempts. The Spartans also dominated in bench points, outscoring UNC 20-5. Every point counts in a game like this.
The turning point? Without a doubt, it was Michigan State's suffocating defense in the first half. They held North Carolina scoreless for a brutal four-and-a-half-minute stretch, fueling a 13-0 run that shifted the momentum entirely. This surge propelled them to a 28-22 lead, capped off by a thunderous left-handed slam from Cooper, courtesy of a perfectly executed alley-oop pass from, you guessed it, Fears. It was the kind of play that gets the crowd roaring and the other team deflated.
The Spartans kept their foot on the gas in the second half. Kohler drained a three-pointer to extend their lead to 53-44. While UNC briefly threatened, closing the gap to 55-52, MSU responded with another decisive 9-0 run. Fears, always the playmaker, nailed a three-pointer before assisting Ward for an easy layup. And then, the dagger: Fears banked in a high-arching shot as the shot clock expired, pushing the Spartans ahead 66-54 with just 4:26 remaining. Game over. Seriously, you could see the fight just drain out of UNC at that point.
While North Carolina still holds a significant 13-6 lead in the overall series, Michigan State has clearly found their number recently, winning three of the last four matchups. The Spartans are playing with a confidence and swagger that is hard to ignore.
Looking ahead, Michigan State will kick off their Big Ten campaign at home against Iowa on Tuesday. North Carolina, meanwhile, will have a tough road test against Kentucky, also on Tuesday. Based on what we saw today, both games should be worth watching. But right now, the Spartans are the team to beat.
