Benedict Cumberbatch fans, rejoice! The acclaimed actor has once again ignited hope that his long-gestating adaptation of Geoffrey Household's classic British novel, "Rogue Male," is finally moving forward. It's a project Cumberbatch clearly feels passionate about, and frankly, I can see why. It's got all the hallmarks of a gripping thriller, and Cumberbatch in the lead? Sign me up!

Benedict Cumberbatch's Next Role: You Won't Believ...

For those unfamiliar, "Rogue Male" is a pre-World War II thriller centered on a British sportsman who attempts to assassinate Hitler. He's caught, tortured, and left for dead, but escapes and must go into hiding, pursued by both the Nazis and his own government. It's a tale of survival, betrayal, and political intrigue, and Cumberbatch himself believes it served as a major influence on Ian Fleming's iconic James Bond character. A bold claim, perhaps, but not entirely without merit when you consider the themes and atmosphere.

Cumberbatch's production company, SunnyMarch, has been trying to get this project off the ground since 2016. That's a long time in Hollywood years. But in a recent appearance on the "SmartLess" podcast, hosted by Sean Hayes, Jason Bateman, and Will Arnett, Cumberbatch sounded more optimistic than ever. "We haven’t got a filming date yet, but it’s something we’re trying to slate for next year," he said, reassuringly adding, "We will make it, definitely." That "definitely" offers a glimmer of hope that wasn't quite there before.

What’s keeping Cumberbatch so invested? Apparently, the story's themes are resonating even more strongly today. "The longer we were exploring the themes of it and the motivation behind the guy’s actions, and the outcome, and how he’s turned on by his own side, as well as the side he’s tried to take down, it’s fascinating how it plays into the political spectrum of what’s going on in the world right now," he explained. That's the key, isn't it? A story that remains relevant decades after it was written speaks to something profound.

Originally, Michael Lesslie ("Macbeth," "Assassin’s Creed") was attached to write the screenplay, and the project was set up at Fox Searchlight. It remains to be seen if Lesslie is still involved, or if the project is still at Fox Searchlight following the Disney acquisition. Regardless, the source material has a proven track record. Peter O’Toole starred in a BBC adaptation back in 1977, and Twentieth Century Fox even tackled it way back in 1940, under the title "Man Hunt." So, the bones are good. Now, let's hope Cumberbatch and SunnyMarch can finally bring this classic story to a new generation. I, for one, will be eagerly awaiting further developments.
