Sweeney Slams Steam's AI Policy! Is This The End For Game Devs?!
Gaming News 27 November 2025

The use of AI in video game development is a hot topic, and it's only getting hotter. Now, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has weighed in on the debate, taking aim at Valve's policy requiring developers to disclose AI-generated content on Steam. His comments signal a growing tension within the industry regarding transparency and the ever-evolving role of AI in content creation. Is it about informed consumers, or unnecessary red tape?

For those not in the know, Valve's current rules demand that developers fess up when they've used AI in their games. We're talking about things like AI-generated textures, dialogue, or even entire characters. For example, on Steam, you can find developer notes for games like Embark Studios' "Arc Raiders," explicitly detailing how they've incorporated AI, while reassuring players that "the final product reflects the creativity and expression of our own development team.” Activision’s "Call of Duty" titles are also playing by the rules, including similar disclosures.

But Sweeney isn't buying it. His skepticism seems to stem from a feeling that this requirement is overreach. He voiced his opinion on social media, responding to a question about these disclosures with a touch of sarcasm: "Why stop at AI? We could have mandatory disclosures for what shampoo brand the developer uses. Customers deserve to know lol." It's a humorous exaggeration, of course, but it highlights his concern that these requirements could quickly become excessive and ultimately burdensome.

Now, this isn't entirely unexpected coming from Sweeney. Epic Games themselves have been experimenting with AI. Remember that AI voice model they integrated into Fortnite over the summer, letting players impersonate Darth Vader? That's right, channeling your inner Sith Lord, all thanks to AI. It's worth noting that this particular implementation used Respeecher's Flash model and ElevenLabs' Flash v2.5, and was even done with the blessing of James Earl Jones' family. (RIP to a legend, by the way.) But things quickly went south when players started using Vader's voice for... less than savory purposes. Epic had to pull the plug on the feature pretty quickly. Perhaps that experience has influenced Sweeney's current stance?
