Russians REINSTATED! Shocking Olympic Decision Stuns the World!
Current Affairs 27 November 2025

Well, this is a turn up for the books. The International Judo Federation (IJF) has just become the first Olympic sporting body to fully reinstate Russian athletes, meaning they'll be able to compete under their national flag once again. This is a pretty significant reversal, considering the widespread bans and restrictions imposed following the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine way back in 2022. You might remember the sheer number of athletes affected, from track and field to swimming, it seemed like almost every sport was touched by the controversy.

Russians REINSTATED! Shocking Olympic Decision Stu...

The IJF's decision, announced Thursday, essentially means Russian athletes will be able to compete with their flag, anthem, and all the associated insignia, starting with the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam. The federation, in a carefully worded statement, emphasized that this move "reaffirms its role as a truly global organization" and, perhaps more importantly, "strengthens its commitment to fair, transparent, and values-based governance." It's all about the optics, right?

They also made a point of highlighting Russia's strong history in judo – and let's be honest, they *are* a powerhouse in the sport. The IJF claims that their full return will "enrich competition at all levels while upholding the IJF’s principles of fairness, inclusivity, and respect." I have to admit, that's a bit of a rosy spin. Let's see if it actually plays out that way. It's easy to talk about inclusivity and respect, but harder to live up to in practice, especially given the current geopolitical climate.

The federation went on to say that "sport must remain neutral, independent, and free from political influence," adding that judo "always promotes friendship, respect, solidarity, and peace." It's a familiar refrain, and one that's been fiercely debated since the initial sanctions were imposed. Can sport *really* be neutral? Or is it inevitably intertwined with politics, whether we like it or not?

Of course, this doesn't mean all restrictions are lifted across the board. While many summer sports federations now allow neutral Russian athletes to compete in world championships, most of the big winter sports bodies are still holding firm on full bans. That means only a small number of Russian athletes in winter disciplines have managed to qualify for the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Games. It's a complicated patchwork of rules and regulations, to say the least. Russian officials, unsurprisingly, have been pretty vocal in their criticism, claiming the West is politicizing sport and unfairly pressuring federations to exclude them. They say they missed a staggering 186 international sporting events in 2022 and 2023 alone. Ouch.

International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry recently urged governments and event organizers to ensure equal access for all athletes and to keep sport politically neutral. She emphasized that every eligible competitor should be able to participate without discrimination and described sport as a "beacon of hope" and a "neutral ground." Easier said than done, perhaps. It will be interesting to see if this IJF decision marks the start of a wider trend, or if it remains an isolated case. Only time will tell.
