James Cameron, the man who brought us Pandora and more recently, the deep sea, just dropped a bombshell. Turns out, he almost traded his Na'vi for… well, witches. The "Avatar" director recently revealed he was seriously considering directing a film adaptation of the mega-hit musical "Wicked." I know, right? It's a far cry from giant blue aliens and sinking ships, but hear him out.
James Cameron Almost Directed 'Wicked'?! You Won't...
Cameron, speaking with Belloni, apparently lamented the state of modern filmmaking, noting that movies now "have to be an event" to justify the hefty budgets needed to even get them off the ground and, crucially, attract audiences away from their streaming services and back into theaters. And frankly, he's got a point. It's a cutthroat world out there for movies that aren't superhero spectacles or legacy sequels. “I don’t know,” Cameron mused, before revealing his personal favorite: "Wizard of Oz," a clear indication of his soft spot for musicals.
Now, Cameron isn't exactly known for his song-and-dance sensibilities, but imagine his visual flair applied to the fantastical world of Oz! Of course, he admitted there was one major snag. "I couldn't find the song," he confessed. And let's be honest, "Wicked" *is* all about the music. Without the soaring melodies and witty lyrics of Stephen Schwartz, you've just got, well, a different version of "The Wizard of Oz," which, to be fair, he already loves.
Before "Wicked" became a Broadway smash, a whole host of talent were circling a potential film adaptation. We're talking Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Moore, Claire Danes… the list goes on and on. Even names like Michelle Pfeiffer and Nicole Kidman were thrown into the mix. It makes you wonder what could have been, right? Could Demi Moore have pulled off a truly iconic Elphaba? We'll never know.
Ultimately, the story found its legs on the stage, becoming the Tony Award-winning phenomenon we all know, thanks to the brilliance of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, and of course, the unforgettable performances of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. It's hard to imagine anyone else now. But still, the thought of James Cameron, of all people, directing "Wicked"... it’s a bizarre, almost delightful, thought experiment. Maybe he’ll tackle “Hamilton” next? Just kidding… mostly.
