Embracer's Fire Sale: More Studios Sold! What Will Happen Next?!
Gaming News 26 November 2025

Embracer Group's restructuring saga continues, folks. The gaming giant, still reeling from that massive, and ultimately failed, $2 billion deal, just announced the sale of Arc Games and Cryptic Studios to a newly formed entity called Project Golden Arc for a cool $30 million. It’s the latest chapter in a story of acquisitions, layoffs, and studio shutdowns that has been shaking the gaming world for the past year.

Embracer's Fire Sale: More Studios Sold! What Will...

Now, for those not deeply embedded in the gaming scene, Arc Games used to be known as Perfect World Entertainment and, more recently, Gearbox Publishing San Francisco. They’re responsible for publishing some pretty big titles like *Star Trek Online*, *Neverwinter*, and the surprisingly successful *Remnant: From The Ashes*. Cryptic Studios, on the other hand, is the development powerhouse behind *Star Trek Online* and *Neverwinter*. So, we're talking about some significant properties here.

Interestingly, Embracer is keeping publishing rights for the *Remnant* franchise. That's a smart move, given its popularity. However, the rights to the MMO *Fellowship* are heading over to Coffee Stain Group. Seems like everyone's getting a piece of the pie, or at least the pieces Embracer is willing to part with.

According to Embracer CEO Phil Rogers, this sale is all about "strengthening our focus on strategic assets and core IPs in Embracer while improving profitability and free cash flow." You know, the usual corporate speak. But honestly, after the last year they've had, streamlining and cutting losses seems like a perfectly reasonable strategy. I mean, you can't just keep buying everything in sight and expect it to work out, can you?

It's easy to forget that Embracer only acquired these studios back in 2021. Flash forward to 2023, and the whole house of cards started to wobble after a massive $2 billion investment, rumored to be linked to Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games, fell through. This triggered the restructuring program that we're still seeing unfold. It's been a tough ride.

Last year was particularly brutal. They sold Saber Interactive and Gearbox Entertainment, two significant assets. And by May of this year, Embracer had reduced its workforce by a staggering 4,532 employees. Plus, 44 studios closed their doors and 80 projects were shelved. Numbers like that really paint a picture of the scale of the problems they're facing.

And to top it all off, former CEO Lars Wingefors stepped down in June, with Rogers taking the helm. It’s safe to say that Embracer is still wrestling with the fallout from its aggressive acquisition spree. Selling off studios like Arc Games and Cryptic Studios is a significant step in their restructuring, but only time will tell if it’s enough to right the ship.
