Education Minister Drops a Bombshell! No More Mid-Year Breaks?!
Education 26 November 2025

Turkey's Education Minister, Yusuf Tekin, has thrown a bit of a curveball into the country's educational landscape. Apparently, those short mid-term breaks that students (and probably some teachers) look forward to twice a year might be on the chopping block. Tekin’s reasoning? A surprising amount of gripes from parents.

Now, I remember the sheer, unadulterated joy of those breaks as a kid. A week free from homework and early mornings? Pure bliss. But Tekin is saying that these breaks, implemented back in 2019, are causing more headaches than holidays for working parents. He claims the Ministry is knee-deep in analyzing whether these respites are truly beneficial, or just another logistical nightmare for families scrambling to find childcare. According to a report in Türkiye newspaper by Mahmut Özay, this isn't just a casual musing; it's a serious evaluation.

Speaking during a visit to Mardin, Tekin laid it all out. "We are receiving numerous requests from parents," he admitted, highlighting the difficulties working parents face. He also mentioned the rather relatable struggle of kids not wanting to go back to school after a week off, and teachers battling to get everyone back into learning mode. It’s a valid point, actually. I can almost hear the collective groan of educators facing that post-holiday slump. It sounds like they've been chewing on this issue for a couple of years already, so hopefully they'll come to a well-informed decision.

Beyond the potential break-busting news, Tekin also touched on other educational hot topics. Plans to beef up the high school curriculum are currently on hold, which, honestly, might be a relief for students already feeling the pressure. He also mentioned new measures to crack down on parents bending the rules to get their kids into specific schools. Apparently, some folks are getting creative with addresses, which, while understandable from a parent's perspective, definitely throws a wrench into the enrollment system.

Interestingly, Tekin was quick to reassure everyone that the transition system between educational levels – specifically the High School Entrance Exam (LGS) – isn't going anywhere anytime soon. So, at least that’s one less thing for students and parents to worry about. The potential removal of the mid-term breaks is definitely the headline grabber, though. It’ll be interesting to see what the Ministry decides, and how it impacts families across Turkey. It just goes to show, even something as seemingly universally loved as a school break can be a surprisingly complex issue.
