Promotion Battle Begins: Which Team Will Face Victory or Devastation?!
Current Affairs 26 November 2025

The tension is palpable, folks. This week marks the beginning of what's always a nail-biting scramble – the K League 2 promotion playoffs. We're talking about dreams being chased, fortunes potentially being made, and the very real threat of relegation looming for some of the big names. It all kicks off this Wednesday with Seoul E-Land FC hosting Seongnam FC at Mokdong Stadium in Seoul at 7 p.m. KST. Get your snacks ready!

Promotion Battle Begins: Which Team Will Face Vict...

Seoul E-Land, coming in as the fourth seed, has that sweet home-field advantage. And here's a wrinkle you need to know: in case of a draw after the regulation 90 minutes, E-Land automatically advances. No extra time. That's a pretty big advantage to have up your sleeve.

E-Land wrapped up their regular season with a solid 65 points, just a hair ahead of Seongnam. Their offensive firepower was a key factor, racking up the third-most goals in the entire 14-team league (64, for those keeping score at home). Leading the charge is Euller, who banged in 12 goals this season.

Now, Seongnam is a different beast altogether. They’re known for their rock-solid defense, allowing only 32 goals in 39 matches – the second-best defensive record in the league. Goalkeeper Yang Han-been was a wall, racking up 13 clean sheets, tying for third overall. Their attack is a little less flashy, with 46 goals (ninth in the league), but they've got Leonardo Ruiz, who finished second in the league with 17 goals. This guy can change a game in an instant.

Interestingly, Seoul E-Land has had Seongnam's number this season, winning three out of their four head-to-head matchups. They snagged 2-1 victories on April 26th and May 4th, then a 1-0 loss on July 19th (you can't win 'em all!), and capped it off with a 2-0 win in their most recent meeting on October 3rd. Does that give them a psychological edge? We'll find out soon enough.

The winner of Wednesday's showdown will then move on to face third-seeded Bucheon FC 1995 on Sunday at 2 p.m. KST at Bucheon Stadium. Same deal here – no extra time. Win or go home.

But it doesn't end there. The winner of that second playoff match earns the right to compete in one of two promotion-relegation playoff series in December. Think home-and-away battles, high stakes, and intense pressure. The K League 2 playoff winner will face the 10th-place team from the K League 1. The K League 2 runners-up, Suwon Samsung Bluewings, will go up against the 11th-place team from the K League 1. Win their series, and they're in the K League 1 for 2026. Talk about a prize!

Of course, we can't forget that the K League 2 champions get an automatic ticket to the top flight, replacing the last-place K League 1 team. This year, it's Incheon United making the jump – a welcome return after just a year in the second tier.

Speaking of the K League 1, the bottom three spots are still up for grabs, with everything being decided this Sunday. Suwon FC currently holds 10th place with 42 points, just two points behind Ulsan HD FC in ninth. If Suwon FC can defeat Gwangju FC and Ulsan loses to Jeju on Sunday, they can dodge the promotion-relegation playoffs altogether. But, if they lose, they face the possibility of being relegated.

And the plot thickens! Ulsan, after winning three consecutive K League 1 titles from 2022 to 2024, is now facing the very real possibility of getting relegated to the K League 2 for the first time. What a fall from grace that would be! Buckle up, folks. This is going to be a wild ride.
