Start believing the hype. That's the message ringing out after Estevao Willian's stunning goal for Chelsea this week. The strike not only helped secure a resounding victory, but it also, perhaps more significantly, overshadowed the performance of fellow prodigy Lamine Yamal, raising the question: is the Estevao bandwagon about to leave the station?
Is Estevao the New Messi? Effortless Brilliance St...
The Champions League clash was billed as a showcase of two of football's brightest young stars, but it was Estevao, all of 18 years old, who stole the show at a buzzing Stamford Bridge. With Chelsea already leading and Barcelona down to 10 men, the Brazilian winger received the ball from Reece James, performed a dazzling little dance past Alejandro Balde, and then unleashed an absolute rocket into the top corner. Barcelona's goalkeeper, Joan Garcia, didn't even have time to blink. It was the kind of goal that makes you rewind the replay again and again.
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin, who knows a thing or two about exciting wingers, was practically gushing. "Start believing the hype," he declared on BBC Radio 5 Live after the 3-0 victory. He wasn't just impressed by the goal itself, calling it "wonderful," but by the whole package. "It was just so tight, the footwork, and it's a brilliant, brilliant finish," Nevin elaborated. "But all the other parts of his game, the intelligence, the movement, the picking up of position... he's a natural." And that's the key, isn't it? Nevin hit the nail on the head when he said it looks "so effortless for him." That's the mark of true talent. You see some players, and they just glide across the pitch with a grace and elegance that's rare and beautiful to witness. It seems Estevao possesses that quality.
Contrast that with Yamal's evening. Substituted in the 80th minute to jeers from the Chelsea faithful as Barcelona's hopes faded, it was a night to forget for the highly-rated Spaniard. Estevao, meanwhile, left the pitch just minutes later to a standing ovation.
Of course, it's worth remembering that this was the first official head-to-head match between these two young talents, both born in 2007. Comparisons will be inevitable, and Yamal still boasts the edge in most attacking statistics, and certainly in experience. He's already achieved so much with Barcelona and Spain, a Euro 2024 winner at just 17 is impressive. He has amassed an impressive goal tally and assist record for his club. Estevao's only just getting started, and he has five goals in 11 matches for Chelsea to date, and an earlier record of 27 goals and 15 assists in 83 games for Palmeiras, plus five goals for Brazil.
Even Estevao himself seemed a little overwhelmed by the moment. "I don't really have any words to sum up how I'm feeling right now. It really was the perfect night," he admitted. "It was such a special moment for me in my career." Chelsea clearly believe he's something special, too, having splashed out a significant sum to bring him to Stamford Bridge. Based on Tuesday night's performance, they might just be right.
