Alright, movie buffs, buckle up! A24 just dropped the trailer for "How to Make a Killing," and it looks absolutely bonkers. Starring Glen Powell, who’s been on a real tear lately ("Anyone But You," anyone?), this dark comedy thriller promises a twisted ride through family drama, murderous intent, and the eternal question: can money really buy happiness?
Glen Powell's Darkest Role Yet! 'How To Make A Kil...
The film is directed by John Patton Ford, who previously brought us "Emily the Criminal," a surprisingly tense and engaging indie flick. That alone gives me hope that "How to Make a Killing" will be more than just your average black comedy. And honestly, the cast is stacked. We're talking Margaret Qualley, the ever-reliable Ed Harris, Jessica Henwick (love her in everything), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley alum!), Topher Grace, and even Raff Law. That's a seriously impressive ensemble.
So, what’s the deal? Powell plays Becket Redfellow, a guy down on his luck whose mother, Mary, an heiress, always believed he was destined for greatness. When she kicks the bucket, broke and alone, Becket decides to take matters into his own hands and reclaim what he believes is rightfully his. That "rightfully his" part is key, because he's going after seven Redfellow relatives standing between him and a massive inheritance. Think "Knives Out," but maybe even darker and definitely more twisted, based on the trailer.
The official synopsis teases a series of "deliciously imaginative accidents" that befall these unfortunate heirs. That alone has me intrigued. But it's not just about the money, is it ever? Becket also has to juggle his relationship with Ruth, his girlfriend who supposedly doesn't care about wealth, and Julia, a flirty ex who definitely does. It sounds like a recipe for some serious awkwardness and comedic tension. I'm personally excited to see how these characters interact, especially with such a talented cast bringing them to life.
A24 is known for taking risks and delivering unique, thought-provoking films, and "How to Make a Killing" seems to fit right in with their brand. The trailer hints at a visually stylish and darkly funny film, and I can't wait to see how Ford handles the balance between the comedy and the thriller elements. Mark your calendars, folks! "How to Make a Killing" hits theaters on February 20th. I'm already counting down the days!
