From Ice Queen to Island Queen: One Woman's SHOCKI...

Natashja's life began in Swedish Lapland, a land of long winters and dancing aurora borealis, nestled four hours north of the Arctic Circle. Her earliest memories are steeped in polar nights, the soft hush of snowfall, and the enduring traditions of a pristine wilderness. Yet, another world proved equally formative: the sun-drenched beaches of Australia. Her childhood unfolded between frozen forests and the scorching coasts of Oz, a duality that clearly shaped her outlook.

"I'm proudly tri-national," Natashja explains. "Swedish through my father, New Zealand through my mother, and Australian thanks to a law granting citizenship to all Kiwis living in Australia." It's a fascinating mix, a testament to the increasingly globalized world we live in, and you can feel that breadth of experience when you speak with her.

Born in Kiruna, the northernmost city in Swedish Lapland, renowned for its vast iron ore mine and Jukkasjärvi – home to the iconic Ice Hotel – Natashja describes the village as her "soul's safe place," her "paradise village." Growing up in a family of hunters and fishers, surrounded by polar nights and the midnight sun, profoundly shaped her. I can only imagine the stark beauty of those landscapes, the quiet resilience it must instill.

"Because my parents lived in different countries, I spent my childhood between Sweden and Australia from ages 4 to 18," she recounts. "I’ve lived in six countries overall, but Sweden and Australia are the heart of my upbringing. New Zealand remains an important thread too, with my mother’s entire family still in Auckland." That kind of nomadic upbringing, while sometimes challenging, inevitably breeds adaptability and a broader perspective.

At 20, Natashja entered the luxury yachting industry, where she later met her husband. After 12 years of constant travel, pregnancy in 2019 prompted a search for a place to settle and welcome their daughter. Australia was chosen, envisioning a summer baby and a six-month stay. However, their daughter's arrival in December 2019 coincided with the pandemic's onset, transforming Australia into home for the next two and a half years. Talk about timing! Sometimes life throws you curveballs, and you just have to adjust.

**EWN: Before moving to Mallorca, where were you living – and what inspired you to make the leap to island life?**

**Natashja:** "Before Mallorca, we were living in Australia. In 2021, I woke up one morning with a sudden, crystal-clear decision already made: we were going to move to Mallorca. It wasn’t planned, it wasn’t discussed – our only real connection to the island was stopping here occasionally while working on yachts. We hardly knew Mallorca at all, but the decision felt right, so I trusted it. It was the best decision for our family. Being in Europe – especially Mallorca – allows us better balance, since my husband Jamie still works in the yachting industry and spends half the year in the Mediterranean." That's the kind of gut feeling that's often worth listening to, isn't it?

She adds, "I’ve since learned that my ancestral roots trace back to Spain – my family originally comes from the Basque region, and my middle name, Alma, was given in honour of my great-grandmother. Fittingly, it means “soul” in Spanish. It makes our move to Mallorca feel even more aligned." It's almost as if fate had a hand in it. Sometimes the pieces of the puzzle just fall into place, even unexpectedly.
