Gifts for Book Clubs
Book Club Dilemma SOLVED! Find the *PERFECT* Gift ...
How does your book club navigate the final, frantic weeks of the year? I know some groups understandably forgo scheduled meetings around late November and December – holiday madness, am I right? – but others opt to pause activities entirely from November, resuming in January with that fresh, new-year energy. If your book club is still going strong and open to a small gift exchange, or even just looking for fresh reading material for the new year, the following list offers some excellent options that I've been curating.
Consider these award-nominated books for upcoming book club selections, along with cookbooks and items to elevate the reading experience. After all, what's better than curling up with a good book and a perfectly paired snack? (Okay, maybe world peace, but let's keep our aspirations realistic for now.)
First up, let's talk heavy hitters. I'm thinking about Booker Prize-nominated novels – the kind that spark real discussions. There's one in particular that delves into the intertwined lives of two individuals across continents and years, transcending race, nationality, and class. The story explores loneliness – Sonia, a writer in Vermont, grappling with homesickness and the shadow of a past relationship with an older artist. Sunny, an Indian immigrant struggling to connect with his American girlfriend. When their families try to arrange a meeting, well, let's just say it's a recipe for awkwardness and potential disaster. Perfect fodder for book club debate!
Now, for something a little different, but equally compelling: *When the Tides Held the Moon* by Venessa Vida Kelley. This debut novel, as Susie Dumond so eloquently puts it, offers something for *everyone*. Fantasy! Romance! Historical Fiction! Found family! Stunning artwork! It's the whole package. The story centers on Benny, a Puerto Rican blacksmith commissioned to build a massive glass tank. He delivers it to a 1910s Coney Island carnival sideshow only to discover it's intended for a real merman captured from the East River! Benny falls in love and realizes he's built the merman's prison. He must now find a way to set him free. With a diverse cast of "human curiosities" and Vida Kelley's vibrant illustrations, this sounds like a genuinely exceptional and visually stunning story.
Finally, for those who appreciate a good literary romance, especially one with a bit of substance, there's a book that serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring presence of Black artists in country music. Think one-hit-wonder Luke, honored to be the opening act for his idol, 90s superstar JoJo Lane, at her Country Music Hall of Fame induction. The concert, held in their shared small Arkansas hometown, forces him to confront his complicated past. Luke was once close to JoJo's daughter, August, until a shocking betrayal fractured their bond and propelled his career... (to be continued, because I'm dying to know what happens next!)
