Current Affairs 25 November 2025

Palma came alive with a sea of supportive faces this past Sunday, as over a thousand people laced up their walking shoes for the seventh annual March for Equality – Nordic Walking Ciutat de Palma. The air was crisp, the sun was shining, and the energy was palpable; it was definitely a morning for positive change. This free, non-competitive event wasn't just about getting some exercise; it was a powerful statement in support of equality for women, both in the sporting arena and in everyday life. It's always heartening to see this kind of community spirit on display.

The event, meticulously organized by the Municipal Sports Institute (IME) under their Palmadona program, kicked off at Plaça de Cort. I overheard a few excited conversations in different languages, highlighting how the event attracted not only local residents but also a large contingent of expatriates, all eager to show their solidarity. It really underscored how this message resonates beyond borders.

Adding a touch of Olympic prestige to the proceedings, Maria Vasco, Spain's first Olympic medalist in the 20 km walk, had the honor of inaugurating the event. She cut the ribbon and spoke with genuine passion about the importance of inclusive sporting activities. It's inspiring to see athletes like her using their platform to advocate for such a worthy cause.

Palma’s second deputy mayor and councillor for Equality, Lourdes Roca, along with IME manager Miguel Ángel Bennàsar, were also present, lending their support and underscoring the local government's commitment to the cause. Representatives from Nordic walking organizations were on hand, too, offering guidance and tips to participants throughout the morning. It was a collaborative effort, no doubt.

The organizers really thought of everything. Refreshment stations stocked with water and fruit, courtesy of MercaPalma, were strategically placed along the three available routes. Registered walkers received a commemorative gym bag and a reusable water bottle – always a welcome touch! Plus, thanks to a partnership with EMT Palma, public transport was free for attendees, which, I'm sure, was particularly appreciated by the international community, many of whom rely on public transit. I saw quite a few smiling faces hopping off the buses.

The morning began with a lively warm-up session led by Nordic Walking Palma and Nordic Walking Ciutat associations. I watched as everyone stretched and prepared, the atmosphere buzzing with anticipation. And upon reaching the finish line, participants were treated to a guided stretching and muscle-recovery session by the sea. What a perfect way to end a morning dedicated to both physical activity and a powerful message. It was all very well organized and contributed to a truly uplifting experience. Palma has definitely reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusion and wellbeing through sport with this event.
