Kneecap Ban: PMO & CBSA Stunned! Who Ordered the Entry Block?!

Kneecap Ban: PMO & CBSA Stunned! Who Ordered the Entry Block?!
Current Affairs 25 November 2025

Ottawa is playing a serious game of "not it" after a Liberal MP publicly announced what seemed like an entry ban on the Irish hip-hop group Kneecap. Documents tabled in Parliament reveal that neither the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) nor the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) were involved in the announcement, leaving a lot of unanswered questions about how this all went down.

Kneecap Ban: PMO & CBSA Stunned! Who Ordered the E...

For those just catching up, Vince Gasparro, a parliamentary secretary focused on combatting crime, took to X (formerly Twitter) in September to declare Kneecap unwelcome in Canada. His reasoning? He accused the group of "advocating for political violence" and "glorifying terrorist organizations." Strong words, to say the least, and the video is still up for anyone to see. But here’s the kicker: according to the CBSA, they weren't even consulted about it. You'd think the agency responsible for actually enforcing entry bans would be in the loop, right?

The PMO is also distancing itself, stating they had "no involvement" in Gasparro's decision to make the announcement. So, who gave him the green light? That's the million-dollar question. It all feels a bit like watching a political hot potato being tossed around.

Adding another layer of intrigue, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) chimed in, noting that one member of Kneecap, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, had his electronic travel authorization (eTA) cancelled a month before Gasparro's announcement. The reason given was that he didn't provide "complete and accurate information" on his application. However, IRCC clarified that this doesn't prevent him from applying again. The agency danced around the bigger issue, saying his new application would be reviewed on its own merits.

Interestingly, the IRCC statement conveniently omits any mention of a previous charge against Óg Ó hAnnaidh in the UK for allegedly flying a Hezbollah flag during a concert – the very incident Gasparro cited as justification for the supposed ban! What a mess.

As for the other two members, John James Ó Dochartaigh and Naoise Ó Cairealláin, their eTA applications are "under review," and they were advised to hold off on travel plans. IRCC also stated that "Inadmissibility for non-compliance generally ends once a client is no longer in a state of non-compliance," which hints that no permanent ban is in effect.

The written response, revealing all this, was only tabled in Parliament on the very last day possible. Global News has reached out to everyone involved, including Kwan, Gasparro, and Kneecap's management. So far, Gasparro is dodging questions about who authorized his announcement. It leaves you wondering what exactly he was trying to achieve, and for whom.
