Dragon Quest's 40-Year Secret REVEALED! You Won't Believe This!
Gaming News 24 November 2025

Dragon Quest is creeping ever closer to its 40th anniversary in 2026, and the upcoming release of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined in February feels like the starting gun has been fired on the celebrations. I recently had the chance to visit Square Enix's Tokyo headquarters, and let me tell you, it was an experience! I got a two-hour hands-on with Reimagined, chatted with the development team, and even got to pick the brain of the legendary Yuji Horii, the very creator of Dragon Quest.

Dragon Quest's 40-Year Secret REVEALED! You Won't ...

Of course, I spent time soaking up all things Reimagined – more on that later. But honestly, the highlight was getting a moment to understand what Horii himself thinks is the secret sauce behind Dragon Quest’s unbelievable staying power. What is it about this series that has captivated generations of gamers?

Horii's answer was surprisingly simple, yet profound: warmth and accessibility. He explained that, back in the day, early computer games often felt a little…cold. He consciously wanted to inject a feeling of warmth into the Dragon Quest series, and equally importantly, he wanted to make it accessible to everyone. That meant thinking beyond just the hardcore computer crowd.

He emphasized his deliberate choice to launch Dragon Quest on the Nintendo Famicom. At the time, home computers were relatively expensive and niche. The Famicom, on the other hand, was far more accessible to the average family. Horii believes this combination of warmth and accessibility is fundamental to the Dragon Quest experience, and it's what has allowed it to become this incredible communication tool for players. Think about it: so many people have cherished memories of playing these games with friends and family. It creates a real connection.

Reimagined producer Takeshi Ichikawa joined Horii during the interview, and he seemed to echo those sentiments. My first impressions of Reimagined suggest that it certainly retains that warmth – that charming island-hopping adventure of the original Dragon Quest VII, but with a fresh, modern visual style. The whole thing just feels…cozy. Inviting, even.

Ichikawa specifically highlighted the RPG elements as a core strength, attributing them directly to Horii's unique style. He praised the humor, the little jokes, the dialogue, and the character expressions, calling them "adorable." He also pointed out the epic story's ability to deeply resonate with players on a personal level. I gotta agree; even from my short demo, I could see that charm shining through.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is scheduled to launch on February 5 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, a rumored Switch 2 (intriguing!), the regular Switch, and PC. It will be interesting to see if it holds up to the legacy and captures the magical warmth Horii talks about. I'm cautiously optimistic!
