TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The political landscape in Florida is about to get a whole lot more interesting. With Governor Ron DeSantis term-limited in 2026, the race to succeed him is officially a hot one, and it’s not just the usual suspects vying for the top spot. A new face has entered the arena, throwing a wrench into what many expected to be a straightforward path for former President Trump's favored candidate.
Florida Governor Race BOMBSHELL: Mega-Donor Defies...
James Fishback, a 30-year-old investor hailing from the Florida Panhandle, announced his gubernatorial bid on Monday. And he didn’t pull any punches. Right out of the gate, Fishback directly targeted Republican Congressman Byron Donalds, the Trump-backed frontrunner. It’s a bold move, especially considering the sway Trump still holds within the Republican party, particularly in Florida.
Fishback's announcement video was… well, let's just say it was definitely a statement. He criticized Donalds' congressional record, and interestingly, he seemed to be echoing talking points often used by DeSantis. We all know the relationship between DeSantis and Trump has been, shall we say, *complicated* since DeSantis decided to challenge Trump for the Republican presidential nomination. It’s fascinating to see those echoes being used in this new gubernatorial race.
His platform, at least from the initial announcement, seems to be heavily focused on immigration – both legal and illegal. And perhaps more controversially, Fishback appears to be wading into the tricky waters of Florida's history, seemingly defending its history of slavery. It’s a rhetoric that’s been used before by certain Republican leaders, tapping into that vein of white grievance that, unfortunately, still resonates with a segment of the GOP base. It's a particularly pointed message considering that Donalds, if elected, would be Florida's first Black governor. You can see where this is going.
Unsurprisingly, the Donalds campaign didn't take the challenge lying down. They swiftly dismissed Fishback as a "RINO," or Republican in name only, and wasted no time highlighting Trump's endorsement. It was a quick and forceful counter-offensive, clearly meant to shut down any momentum Fishback might be hoping to gain. “Byron Donalds will be Florida’s next governor because he is the proven conservative fighter endorsed by President Trump," said Ryan Smith, chief strategist for Donalds' campaign. “Anyone running against him is an anti-Trump RINO and will get crushed in the Republican primary.” Harsh words, but that's politics, right?
It's early days, of course, but this race is shaping up to be a real battle. Fishback's entry definitely adds a new layer of complexity, and it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out, especially in relation to Trump's influence and the ever-shifting dynamics within the Florida Republican party. One thing's for sure: Florida politics are never boring.
