Nerja UFO?! Mystery Lights Spark Alien Frenzy - What Are They?!
Current Affairs 24 November 2025

Flying saucers over Nerja? Okay, maybe not. But for a couple of evenings, the skies above this beautiful Spanish town did a pretty convincing impression of an alien invasion, or at least a scene ripped straight from "Independence Day." Social media, naturally, went absolutely bonkers.

Nerja UFO?! Mystery Lights Spark Alien Frenzy - Wh...

The cause of all the excitement? Enormous lenticular clouds, those smooth, lens-shaped formations that often get mistaken for UFOs. They hovered, perfectly formed, over the Sierra de Almijara and Tejeda mountains, looking like something out of a sci-fi movie. And trust me, I’ve seen my fair share of strange weather phenomena, but these were something special.

Thankfully (or maybe disappointingly, depending on your beliefs), meteorologists have stepped in to assure us that it's all perfectly natural. José María Sánchez of AEMET Andalucia, the state meteorological agency, explained that it's all down to the strong north-westerly winds from the Atlantic colliding with those mountain ridges just behind the Costa del Sol. Apparently, as the air is forced upwards in these "stable waves," any moisture in the air condenses into these gorgeous, smooth clouds. What’s fascinating is how still they appear, just hanging there while the wind is actually whistling through them at a fair clip.

The resulting optical illusion is stunning – glowing, saucer-like shapes hanging silently in the sky. Now, Nerja isn’t exactly a stranger to lenticular clouds; they're a fairly common sight during autumn and winter. However, the recent display was particularly spectacular – the clouds were more perfectly formed, and their colors were incredibly vibrant. No wonder people were reaching for their cameras!

It's interesting to think about how these clouds have been interpreted throughout history. Back in the 20th century, particularly, they fueled countless UFO sightings (some undoubtedly genuine misinterpretations, others… perhaps less so). Go back further, and they were often seen as bad omens, or even signs of supernatural events. It just goes to show how easily we can project our fears and fantasies onto the natural world. I remember once seeing a similar formation as a kid, and being absolutely convinced I'd seen a spaceship – only to be told it was just "a funny cloud".

The good news is, the cold weather front is still moving across the mountains, so we can expect to see these lenticular clouds popping up intermittently. So, if you happen to be in Nerja and spot a glowing disc in the sky, relax. It's not aliens, it's not the end of the world, it's just Mother Nature showing off one of her most photogenic cloud formations. Grab your camera, and enjoy the show!
