Despite the lukewarm reception to Marvel's "Eternals," director Chloé Zhao hasn't given up hope for a sequel. In fact, she's openly discussed potential storylines she'd love to explore, fueling speculation among fans who, let's be honest, are probably still scratching their heads about the first one.
Eternals 2?! Director's SHOCKING Tease Has Fans Be...
Now, before you get too excited, it's worth remembering that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige himself stated last year that "there are no immediate plans for Eternals 2." Ouch. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement. The original "Eternals," released in 2021, boasted an all-star cast and a massive budget, yet it stumbled with critics and underperformed at the box office. I remember walking out of the theater feeling… confused. It felt like a swing for the fences that didn't quite connect.
But Zhao isn't letting that dampen her enthusiasm. She's hinted at wanting to delve deeper into the Celestial Arishem's storyline, specifically his promise to return for judgment. "Which is what Arishem said, 'I'll be back for judgment,'" Zhao explained. "And the reason why those brief plays existed is for humanity to see how the gods are seeing us, so we could evaluate how we were as a part of this cycle of the universe. Are we doing a good job? Are we kind to each other? Are we getting to know ourselves well enough?" It's a weighty concept, and honestly, potentially fascinating if handled right. But *if* is the key word there.
The reality is, the "Eternals" fallout seems to have been pretty significant. Kumail Nanjiani, who played Kingo, revealed earlier this year that he'd signed on for a whole multi-project deal – six movies, a video game, even a theme park ride! Sadly, none of that materialized. He even admitted to seeking counseling after the film's less-than-stellar reception. That paints a pretty clear picture, doesn't it?
So, what does the future hold for these cosmic beings? Will Arishem give humanity a passing grade? Will we ever see Ikaris soaring through the skies again? And what about Harry Styles as Eros (Thanos' brother!), and Patton Oswalt as Pip the Troll? Marvel dangled those carrots, and now we're left wondering if they'll ever actually deliver. Furthermore, we had that brief introduction of Mahershala Ali's Blade through a voice cameo. That character's been put on the back burner too. A lot of dangling threads here.
In the meantime, Zhao is keeping busy. Her Shakespearean historical drama, "Hamnet," with Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, is coming out this week. She's also reportedly attached to a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot, although that project's fate remains uncertain as well. So, while Zhao's passion for "Eternals" is admirable, it looks like fans might have to wait a *long* time – if ever – to see a sequel come to fruition.
