Hallucinations?! Ex-President's Bizarre Excuse SHOCKS Brazil!
Current Affairs 24 November 2025

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's legal team is now claiming his recent alleged attempt to mess with his electronic ankle monitor – you know, the one he's been wearing under house arrest – was actually a result of health problems and medication side effects. Yes, you read that right: hallucinations are apparently the new excuse.

Hallucinations?! Ex-President's Bizarre Excuse SHO...

Bolsonaro was, of course, recently taken into custody. The Supreme Court is scheduled to vote Monday on whether to keep him locked up pre-emptively. This whole saga started after he was hit with a staggering 27-year prison sentence in September. The charge? Allegedly trying to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election. Bolsonaro, naturally, denies any wrongdoing, and his lawyers are fighting tooth and nail to appeal the verdict. However, earlier this month, Brazil’s top court panel wasn't buying it, unanimously rejecting his appeal. It's a complex situation, to say the least.

According to Agencia Brasil, the public news agency, Bolsonaro's lawyers submitted a document to the Brazilian Supreme Court stating that the ex-president "suffers from concomitant illnesses that require treatment" and is on a cocktail of medications, some of which "affect the central nervous system." The attorneys went on to say that the interaction of these medicines is known for causing "side effects, including altered mental status with possible mental confusion, disorientation, impaired coordination, sedation, impaired balance, hallucinations, and cognitive impairment." Essentially, they're arguing that he might not have been entirely in his right mind when he allegedly tampered with the monitor.

Unsurprisingly, the attorneys have now asked the court to reconsider the latest ruling, hoping to get him back under house arrest instead of in actual custody. The whole case, if you recall, is rooted in a coup plot that prosecutors say began way back in 2021. The allegation is that Bolsonaro and his allies were actively trying to undermine public faith in Brazil’s electoral system. Then, after his 2022 defeat, his supporters allegedly went wild in the capital, Brasilia, storming and vandalizing government buildings on January 8, 2023. It was a pretty chaotic scene, and a dark day for Brazilian democracy.

And it's not just Brazil watching closely. Former US President Donald Trump has weighed in, calling Bolsonaro’s prosecution politically motivated and even slapping steep 50% tariffs on Brazil. Although, earlier this month, Washington started walking back some of those levies. The US has also sanctioned Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes – the judge who ruled on the verdict – for what they're calling "serious human rights violations" and announced visa restrictions against him and other court officials. This has clearly escalated into an international incident.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva hasn't held back either, condemning what he sees as Washington’s pressure tactics. He's even accused the US of "helping stage a coup," and vowed that Brazil "will not forget it.” The whole situation is a political powder keg, and the coming days could be pivotal in determining Bolsonaro's fate, and potentially the future of Brazil's relationship with the United States. It's a story we'll certainly be following closely.
