Nikola Jokić, the Denver Nuggets' behemoth of brilliance, is once again the odds-on favorite to snag the 2025 NBA MVP award. Anyone surprised? I didn't think so. Nine triple-doubles in just sixteen games? Come on. He's playing chess while everyone else is still trying to figure out checkers. The man's a walking, talking, passing, and rebounding highlight reel. And frankly, it's getting almost predictable... almost.
NBA MVP SHOCKER! Jokic Favored, Wemby's Dream CRUS...
Last season saw Shai Gilgeous-Alexander rightfully hoist the Maurice Podoloff Trophy after leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to an unexpected championship. This year, SGA is continuing his stellar play, averaging nearly 32 points per game, along with solid assist and rebound numbers. The Thunder are off to a blistering 17-1 start, which is pretty impressive considering Jalen Williams has been sidelined for every single one of those games. Still, Jokić's consistent dominance puts him slightly ahead in the early MVP race, though it's definitely a marathon, not a sprint.
Speaking of surprising starts, what about the Lakers? They're sitting at 12-4 *despite* LeBron James only gracing the court twice. It's a testament to the depth they've built. And then there's Luka Dončić. He's seemingly found a new gear. Through 12 games, he's averaging a league-best 34.6 points. Rebounds? Check. Assists? Check. He's basically a smaller, slightly more flamboyant version of Jokić. The Mavericks’ success will hinge on his health, and if he keeps up this pace, he will challenge Jokic for the award.
Poor Giannis. The Bucks are floundering at 8-9, which is nowhere near where they expected to be. He's still putting up monster numbers – 31.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists – but it feels like he's carrying the entire team on his back. He's currently nursing a hamstring injury, which is definitely not helping matters. The stat that really sticks out is the Bucks' record when Giannis scores less than 30 points: one win. One. And they've *lost* games where he's scored 32, 37, and even 40! Milwaukee desperately needs to figure things out quickly if Giannis wants any shot at the MVP trophy. The window is closing, and right now, it looks like Jokić's award to lose... again.
