BRASILIA, Brazil – The plot thickens in the saga of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Just a day after landing in jail, the controversial leader claimed "hallucinations" drove him to violate his ankle monitor, leading to his arrest. It's a bizarre twist in a story already brimming with political intrigue.
Bolsonaro Arrested! Hallucinations Drove Him to An...
Bolsonaro, now 70, told a judge on Sunday that a nervous breakdown, fueled by a change in medication, triggered the incident. He's currently in preemptive detention, ordered by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who fears Bolsonaro might try to flee the country. Remember, Bolsonaro was hit with a hefty 27-year prison sentence back in September for his alleged attempts to cling to power after his 2022 electoral defeat. The whole thing sounds like something out of a political thriller, doesn't it?
According to court documents released after an online meeting between Bolsonaro and assistant judge Luciana Sorrentino, the former president claimed he experienced vivid "hallucinations" that the ankle monitor was bugged, prompting him to try and dismantle it. Imagine being in that state of mind – talk about paranoia! Sorrentino added that Bolsonaro said he’d never had a breakdown of this magnitude before and suspected the medication change last week might be to blame. He also reiterated that he had no intention of escaping.
The document further reveals that Bolsonaro admitted to not sleeping well and feeling "a certain paranoia" that piqued his curiosity about the monitoring device. What’s interesting is his claim that he was surrounded by family and an aide while fiddling with the device late at night, yet none of them noticed anything. You'd think someone would have intervened! The violation occurred around 12:08 a.m. Saturday, and the arrest order swiftly followed.
Adding another layer to the story, two of Bolsonaro's doctors, who publicly voiced their support for him, announced they'd stopped prescribing the medication they believe was causing the problem. They also assured everyone that he's physically healthy. The preemptive arrest order is up for a vote on Monday, and Bolsonaro's legal team is undoubtedly pushing for him to remain under house arrest, citing his health concerns. But Justice de Moraes hasn't been receptive to similar arguments in the past.
Former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro, who was out of town during the arrest, was allowed to visit her husband for two hours. She didn't speak to the press afterward, adding to the air of mystery. Outside the police headquarters, the scene was predictably divided, with pro-Bolsonaro protesters demanding the removal of Lula and de Moraes, while others celebrated Bolsonaro's incarceration. Sao Paulo even featured a giant inflatable doll of Bolsonaro in prison garb – quite a spectacle, I must say. The political divide in Brazil remains as stark as ever.
