Short Track Sweep! Korea Dominates Poland - What's Their Secret?!
Current Affairs 24 November 2025

Korea rebounded in a big way on the final day of the ISU Short Track World Tour stop in Gdansk, Poland, silencing any doubts after a quiet start. They didn't just win, they *dominated*, snagging three gold medals in a display of speed and strategy that was truly something to watch.

Short Track Sweep! Korea Dominates Poland - What's...

The highlight reel undoubtedly features the women's 1,500-meter final. Kim Gil-li and Choi Min-jeong put on a clinic, going 1-2 in a thrilling finish. You could practically feel the tension as they strategically hung back before unleashing their speed in the final laps. Kim ultimately took the gold with a time of 2:30.610, just a hair ahead of Choi at 2:30.656. Canada's Courtney Sarault, who has been a consistent threat this season, rounded out the podium with a well-deserved bronze. It's worth noting that this was Kim's first individual gold on the World Tour this season, a major accomplishment. And Choi? She's quietly building an impressive medal collection, now boasting four individual race medals.

But the individual brilliance didn't stop there. Before their 1-2 finish, Kim and Choi teamed up with Lee Jeong-min and Rim Jong-un to absolutely crush the mixed 2,000m relay. Seriously, it was close. The Netherlands pushed them to the very end, but the Korean team held on for the win (2:40.155 to 2:40.224). The key was the handoff between Kim and Choi, giving Lee the space to really extend their lead. Rim then brought it home, securing Korea's first mixed relay title of the season.

And let's not forget the men! Lee and Rim, fresh off their mixed relay victory, joined forces with Shin Dong-min and Lee June-seo in the men's 5,000m relay. They crossed the finish line first, but things got a bit dramatic. The Netherlands, who were initially right behind them, were later disqualified for a violation. This moved China up to silver and Italy to bronze. I always feel bad for a team getting disqualified, but rules are rules, and the Korean men will gladly take the win.

The stakes are high on this World Tour, you see. Skaters are all battling for precious quota places for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Every race, every point, matters. South Korea, of course, is a powerhouse in short track, leading the all-time Olympic medal count. They are currently sitting pretty atop the overall standings in the men's 5,000m relay and the mixed 2,000m relay, and second in the women's 3,000m relay. So, yeah, expect to see them contending for a lot of those Olympic spots.

Keep an eye on Kim Gil-li and Choi Min-jeong in the women's 1,500m. They're ranked second and third overall, right behind Sarault. The rest of the season should be exciting.
