Bolsonaro's "Hallucinations" Defense?! Judge Stunned By Arrest Details!
Current Affairs 23 November 2025

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, currently cooling his heels serving a lengthy 27-year sentence related to his failed coup attempt, has offered a rather unusual explanation for his latest legal predicament. According to Bolsonaro, it all boils down to… hallucinations. Yes, you read that right. He claims a sudden medication change triggered a nervous breakdown, leading him to mess with his ankle monitor while under house arrest. It's a far cry from the macho strongman image he cultivated for years.

Bolsonaro's "Hallucinations" Defense?! Judge Stunn...

The 70-year-old Bolsonaro made this rather startling claim to a judge this past Sunday, just a day after Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who’s become a real thorn in Bolsonaro's side, ordered his preemptive jailing. The reason? De Moraes cited concerns that Bolsonaro was a flight risk, and it seems those concerns were fueled by information that Bolsonaro had violated the terms of his ankle monitor at precisely 12:08 a.m. on Saturday. Imagine getting dinged for a technical foul in the middle of the night!

According to a Supreme Court document, assistant judge Luciana Sorrentino reported that Bolsonaro claimed he experienced "hallucinations" involving a supposed wiretap within the ankle monitor. He apparently felt compelled to investigate. Bolsonaro reportedly told Sorrentino that he "did not remember having a breakdown of this magnitude in another occasion," chalking it all up to a recent tinkering with his medications. He did, however, emphatically deny any intention of skipping town.

The document went on to say that Bolsonaro also reported suffering from insomnia and "a certain paranoia," which only intensified his curiosity about the device strapped to his ankle. He insists that he was in the company of his daughter, brother, and an aide at the time of the alleged tampering, but, strangely, none of them apparently witnessed his late-night exploration. That's convenient, isn't it?

Now, a panel is scheduled to vote this Monday on the preemptive arrest order. Bolsonaro's meeting with the assistant judge was basically a procedural step, designed to address the legality of his jailing and allow his legal team to plead for continued house arrest due to alleged health concerns. These requests, however, have been repeatedly shot down by Justice de Moraes, who clearly isn't buying what Bolsonaro is selling.

De Moraes did, however, authorize a visit from former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro. Meanwhile, outside federal police headquarters, the atmosphere was predictably tense. Pro-Bolsonaro protestors demanded the removal of both President Lula and Justice de Moraes, while Bolsonaro’s opponents celebrated his continued legal woes. It’s just another day in the increasingly polarized political landscape of Brazil.
