For fans of the Barone family, the news is bittersweet. "Everybody Loves Raymond," that sitcom staple that ran for nine seasons and continues to find new viewers in syndication, is getting a 30th-anniversary reunion special. But don't hold your breath for a reboot. Creator Phil Rosenthal and star Ray Romano are adamant: it's just not happening.
'Raymond' Reunion DREAM CRUSHED! Why It's NEVER Ha...
The reunion, aptly titled "Everybody Loves Raymond: 30th Anniversary Reunion," will air on CBS on November 24th, a full 29 years after the show's original premiere. "I wanted to see my friends and celebrate our nice show," Rosenthal explained. A simple sentiment, but one that resonates with anyone who's ever wanted to recapture a special moment in time.
But why no reboot? Well, as Romano points out, the landscape has changed. The show has sadly lost several key members of its cast, including Doris Roberts (Marie Barone), Peter Boyle (Frank Barone), and Sawyer Sweeten, who played one of the Barone children. Not to mention recurring guest stars Fred Willard and Georgia Engel, who were comedy gold as Amy's quirky parents. Losing so many foundational performers is a heavy blow. "We don’t want to do it because it would never be as good," Romano stated frankly. And you know what? He's probably right. Sometimes, you just can't recapture the magic.
Romano continued, "Even if every cast member was alive and well, they’re never as good as when the show was thriving and we were younger...it would almost feel disrespectful to them to even try to do it." It's a thoughtful and respectful position, one that acknowledges the unique chemistry and circumstances that made the original series so beloved.
Rosenthal echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of protecting the show's legacy. "I’m a student of TV," Rosenthal said, and he’s seen firsthand how some shows can overstay their welcome. "Maybe we wouldn’t be on 30 years later if we had done more shows than we should have.” It’s a valid point. Better to leave them wanting more than to tarnish a classic, I always say.
Interestingly, a spinoff was once on the table. Rosenthal had envisioned a show centered on Ray's brother Robert (Brad Garrett) and his wife Amy (Monica Horan). The idea was to incorporate Amy's family, the hilariously offbeat Willard and Engel, and her equally eccentric brother, played by Chris Elliott. "We thought we could use some of the characters and send them into a different world, in a different setting," Rosenthal explained. Sadly, CBS passed on the project. What could have been!
And here's a fun fact: "Everybody Loves Raymond" remains Ray Romano's sole multi-camera sitcom to date. While he was initially cast in "NewsRadio," he was famously replaced by Joe Rogan just two days into rehearsals. Since "Raymond" wrapped, Romano has largely gravitated towards dramedies and single-camera projects. So, while we won't be seeing the Barones back in a new series, we can still enjoy the old episodes and look forward to the reunion special. Sometimes, nostalgia is best served with a healthy dose of reality.
