Georgia Students Triumph in Battle Against Book Bans, Reinstating Titles in Reading Bowl

In a victory for intellectual freedom and student advocacy, a group of Georgia high schoolers successfully overturned a controversial decision to ban eight books from the state's Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl (HRRB). The decision, announced on November 7, 2025, marks a significant win against censorship efforts targeting young readers.

The HRRB, a popular competition designed to foster a love of reading among Georgia students, selects its reading list from the Georgia Peach Book Award nominees. This annual process involves librarians carefully curating a list of 20 recently published titles, giving students the power to rate and ultimately select the award winner. The recent ban of eight titles from this list sparked immediate outrage and galvanized student action.

Driven by a passion for literature

Driven by a passion for literature and a commitment to open access, students like Claire, a junior and long-time Reading Bowl participant, and Vidya, a newcomer to the competition, spearheaded the charge. Upon learning of the ban through a notification from her school librarian, Claire immediately reached out to the HRRB board seeking clarification, but received no response. Undeterred, she contacted the authors of the banned books, many of whom responded quickly and offered their support.

Simultaneously, other students launched a petition aimed at the HRRB steering committee. The petition served to raise awareness of the issue and apply pressure on the committee to reconsider its decision. This multi-pronged approach, combining direct communication with authors and a public awareness campaign, proved remarkably effective.

The student's efforts brought the story to national attention, highlighting the growing trend of book censorship and the crucial role young people are playing in defending intellectual freedom. Faced with overwhelming feedback from the community and the unwavering advocacy of these students, the HRRB State Steering Committee voted to reinstate all 20 Georgia Peach Book Award nominees for the 2026 high school competition.

The reinstatement of the books is a testament to the power of student voice and the importance of fostering critical thinking and open dialogue. As the HRRB itself stated, the passion and advocacy displayed by these students served as a powerful reminder that the spirit of the competition lives strongest in those who read, think, and speak up. This victory serves as an inspiration to students across the country fighting against censorship and advocating for access to diverse and engaging literature.
