This weekend marks a pretty significant milestone for gamers – the 20th anniversary of the Xbox 360's launch. Microsoft's second attempt at cracking the console market proved to be a massive success, and looking back at its best-selling games in the US is a fun trip down memory lane. One thing is immediately clear: the *Call of Duty* franchise reigned supreme.

According to Circana's Mat Piscatella (who always has the best data, by the way), a whopping seven of the top 20 best-selling Xbox 360 games in the US were *Call of Duty* titles. Seriously, seven! And it gets even crazier – six of those entries managed to claw their way into the top 10. What's more, four *Call of Duty* games actually landed spots in the top five. That's some serious domination.

Of course, you can't talk about Xbox without mentioning *Halo*. Microsoft's flagship franchise secured three places on the list, proving its enduring popularity. *Gears of War*, another Xbox staple, managed to contribute two titles to the best-sellers. And let's not forget those perennial favorites like *Minecraft* and *The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim*. It's pretty wild to consider that, thanks to recent acquisitions, Microsoft now controls the rights to 17 out of these 20 top-selling games. Talk about market control!

Outside of the Microsoft empire, Rockstar Games managed to snag two spots with their critically acclaimed titles: *Red Dead Redemption* and *Grand Theft Auto IV*. Man, those games were huge! EA's *Battlefield 3* was the publisher's sole representative, a testament to its strong showing in a market otherwise dominated by the aforementioned giants. I remember the *Battlefield 3* vs. *Modern Warfare 3* debates vividly – good times.

It's interesting to note that Peter Moore, the former Microsoft executive who really championed the Xbox and Xbox 360, has recently been talking about the console's fierce battle against the PlayStation 3 for market share. The Xbox 360 really was one of Microsoft's biggest wins in the gaming world. And even though the Xbox 360 marketplace shut down last year (a sad day!), Microsoft surprisingly released an update for the system in June 2025 – proving they haven't completely forgotten their beloved console. A bit late maybe, but a nice gesture nonetheless.
