Heartbreak in Vancouver. You just can't script it sometimes, and last night's MLS playoff match between LAFC and the Vancouver Whitecaps was a perfect example of that kind of unpredictable drama. Son Heung-min, the Korean superstar, put on a dazzling display, scoring twice and dragging his team back from the brink, but ultimately, it wasn't enough.
Son Heung-min Heroics! Penalty Miss Haunts LAFC - ...
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, LAFC looked dead in the water. Vancouver was playing with a swagger, and their defense seemed impenetrable. But then Son happened. He sparked a second-half comeback that had the travelling LAFC fans roaring, netting two goals to force extra time. The atmosphere in BC Place was absolutely electric, a proper playoff battle.
Extra time was a tense affair, with LAFC peppering the Vancouver goal. They hit the woodwork repeatedly, so agonizingly close to snatching a late winner. Bouanga, in particular, was having one of those nights where everything seemed to be just off. It felt like only a matter of time before they scored, but the Vancouver defense held firm, and penalties loomed. Cue the drama.
The penalty shootout was a rollercoaster of emotions. Son, usually ice-cold in these situations, uncharacteristically struck the post with LAFC's first kick. It was a massive blow, and Vancouver seized the advantage. Then Delgado skied his penalty over the bar, seemingly sealing LAFC's fate. But Lloris, the veteran goalkeeper, made a brilliant save to give LAFC a lifeline. However, ultimately, Mathias Laborda slotted home the winning penalty for Vancouver, sending them through to the conference final with a 4-3 victory.
It's a crushing defeat for LAFC, who had visions of lifting their second MLS Cup. They'd beaten Vancouver in the previous two postseasons, so perhaps they went in a little overconfident. You could see the disappointment etched on the faces of the players and staff after the final penalty. Vancouver, on the other hand, were ecstatic, a deserved victory after a battling performance.
Vancouver's opening goal came from a long kick by goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka, releasing Emmanuel Sabbi on a breakaway. Sabbi showed composure to chip the ball over Lloris. Son's first goal was a scrappy affair, a goalmouth scramble that he eventually poked home. His second, a stunning free kick in stoppage time after a foul on Bouanga, showed his class and sent the game into the extra period. A signature moment for him, though it didn't prove decisive on the night.
So, Vancouver moves on to face the winner of San Diego FC and Minnesota United FC. As for LAFC, they'll be left to rue those missed chances and that ultimately costly penalty shootout. Sometimes, that's just how football goes. It's a cruel game, but that's why we love it, right?
