Iowa City, IA – You could practically feel the tension in Kinnick Stadium as Iowa completed a stunning, double-digit comeback against Michigan State on Saturday, capped off with a last-second field goal. Drew Stevens, cool as ice, drilled a 44-yarder as the clock expired, giving the Hawkeyes a hard-fought 20-17 victory and sending Spartan fans home with their heads in their hands.

The win was a much-needed shot in the arm for Iowa (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten), snapping their own two-game losing streak. Honestly, after watching the first three quarters, I wasn't sure they had it in them. They were down 17-7, and the offense looked, well, like the Iowa offense we've come to expect – struggling to move the ball. But something clicked in that fourth quarter.
Michigan State (3-8, 0-8), on the other hand, is in a full-blown crisis. This loss marks their eighth straight overall and extends their Big Ten losing streak to a gut-wrenching nine games. Quarterback Alessio Milivojevic, who had a decent game throwing for 255 yards and two touchdowns (both to Chrishon McCray), must be wondering what he has to do to get a win. After those two third-quarter touchdown bombs, it looked like the Spartans might actually break the curse. But it wasn't to be.
The Hawkeyes' comeback started with a 26-yard field goal from Stevens with just over 11 minutes to play. Then, with under two minutes remaining, quarterback Mark Gronowski found Jacob Gill for a crucial 13-yard touchdown pass to tie the game. A massive 40-yard punt return by Kaden Wetjen ignited that drive. Wetjen also had a monster 62-yard punt return touchdown in the first quarter – talk about a spark! Without him, I don't think Iowa pulls this one out.
Down to the wire, Iowa, starting from their own 21, marched 53 yards in just five plays, setting up Stevens for the game-winner. It was a gutsy performance, especially considering the pressure. You could see the relief on Coach Ferentz's face as that kick sailed through the uprights.
While the stats show Michigan State actually outgained Iowa in total yards (335-301), the Hawkeyes' defense really stepped up in the fourth quarter, holding the Spartans to a paltry 26 yards. That's the kind of grit you need to win close games. For Michigan State, it’s back to the drawing board. They'll try to salvage something from this season next Saturday when they "host" Maryland in Detroit.
