Ubisoft's Bold AI Gamble: Gaming's Next 3D Revolution?!
Gaming News 21 November 2025

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently dropped a bombshell, comparing the potential impact of generative AI on video games to the seismic shift from 2D to 3D graphics. That's a bold statement, folks, and it definitely caught my attention. Guillemot claims that generative AI is now integrated across the entire company, which is a pretty sweeping claim.

Ubisoft's Bold AI Gamble: Gaming's Next 3D Revolut...

During a recent earnings call, Guillemot didn't mince words, calling generative AI a "revolution" on par with the move to 3D. Now, I've been around long enough to remember when polygons were the hot new thing. Back then, everyone was scrambling to figure out how to make the most of this new dimension. So, the comparison is interesting, to say the least. Is AI truly going to reshape game development and the player experience as drastically as moving from sprites to fully realized 3D worlds? Only time will tell.

Guillemot went on to suggest that Ubisoft is making "groundbreaking" progress on player-facing generative AI, and that they're already moving beyond the prototyping phase. Color me intrigued! He even hinted that we'll see more before the end of the year. I'm genuinely curious to see what this looks like in practice. Imagine personalized storylines that adapt in real-time based on your choices, or NPCs with truly unique and dynamic personalities. The possibilities, theoretically, are pretty mind-blowing.

But here's where things get a little more grounded. Guillemot also mentioned that teams across all Ubisoft studios are exploring new use cases for generative AI in programming, art, and overall game quality. This sounds more like streamlining the development process, which is arguably where AI could have the most immediate impact. Things like automating repetitive tasks, generating concept art, or even assisting with level design could free up developers to focus on the more creative aspects of their jobs.

It's worth remembering that Ubisoft's previous forays into this area haven't always been universally lauded. There was, for example, a generative AI tool that was described as a solution in search of a problem – built, it seemed, with the hope that someone would eventually figure out how to use it effectively. That approach, as some have pointed out, is a little backwards. Good tools solve existing problems.

And let's not forget the recent "accidental" inclusion of a placeholder generative AI string in Anno 117: Pax Romana, for which Ubisoft had to apologize. It's a reminder that this technology is still evolving, and there are bound to be bumps along the road. This announcement also comes on the heels of a temporary trading halt for Ubisoft stock, which fueled speculation about a potential acquisition, ultimately chalked up to a new auditor. So, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes at Ubisoft, clearly. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this AI revolution actually plays out.
