Lone Star Victory: Korea Celebrates, But Who REALLY Won?!
Current Affairs 21 November 2025

Korea's recent victory against Lone Star, the U.S.-based private equity fund, in a 13-year legal battle is certainly something to celebrate. Avoiding a hefty $216.5 million payout plus interest is a win for Korean taxpayers. However, instead of basking in the glow of victory, a political firestorm has erupted over who gets to take the credit. It’s a familiar story, isn’t it? Politics always seems to find a way to complicate even the best news.

Lone Star Victory: Korea Celebrates, But Who REALL...

The controversy really kicked off after Prime Minister Kim Min-seok and Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho held a public briefing just as the news broke about Korea's successful annulment request in the investor-state dispute settlement case. Their remarks seemed to paint the victory as solely attributable to the current Lee Jae Myung administration. Justice Minister Jung even went so far as to say that while some might argue the outcome was pre-determined, it was the dedication of officials *after* a specific crisis that sealed the deal. Now, that’s where things got spicy.

Former People Power Party (PPP) leader and then-Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon didn't take kindly to this narrative. He accused the Lee administration of a blatant “credit grab.” Han, quite bluntly, pointed out that the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), now in power, had originally opposed the annulment request, deeming it a waste of taxpayer money with little chance of success. "Those who opposed it should apologize instead of trying to take credit now,” he stated on Facebook, not mincing words. He doubled down the next day, emphasizing that this wasn’t about claiming achievements, but rather correcting misleading information.

Han insists the final hearings wrapped up in January, before the current administration even took office, and that the DPK was initially against the whole appeal process. You can almost feel the frustration in his statements. I even remember when Han originally challenged the ruling; the skepticism from the then-opposition was pretty palpable. Now, they’re singing a different tune, and that’s rubbing some people the wrong way.

The PPP has echoed Han’s sentiments, calling the administration's attempt to claim exclusive credit "absurd." It’s escalated into a full-blown political squabble. Interestingly, public opinion appears to be siding with Han. Online commenters are saying things like, “Give credit where credit is due” and that the DPK shouldn’t be trying to capitalize on this for political gain. One commenter even suggested a "mature Democratic Party" would acknowledge Han Dong-hoon's role. It just goes to show you, even a victory can become fodder for political battling.
