Panesar's Shock Response to Smith: Did TV Errors Outweigh Field Fumbles?!

Panesar's Shock Response to Smith: Did TV Errors Outweigh Field Fumbles?!
Sports 20 November 2025

Alright, alright, alright. It seems the Ashes are already heating up even before a single ball has been bowled, thanks to a bit of pre-series banter that's taken a rather… personal turn. Former England spinner Monty Panesar has fired back at Steve Smith after the Aussie stand-in captain took a rather bizarre swipe at his, shall we say, less-than-stellar performance on Celebrity Mastermind a few years back.

Panesar's Shock Response to Smith: Did TV Errors O...

For those who missed it, Smith, stepping in as captain due to Pat Cummins' injury, decided to poke fun at Panesar’s quiz show appearance where he famously (or infamously) struggled with some general knowledge questions. Apparently, Smith thinks anyone who confuses Athens with a German city shouldn't be taken seriously when it comes to cricket analysis. Fair enough, I suppose… if we're judging cricketing acumen based on geography skills.

Panesar, however, wasn't about to let Smith's comments slide. In a rather sharp and arguably justified response, he reminded everyone of Smith's own "shocker" – the infamous ball-tampering scandal in South Africa that cost him the Australian captaincy and a significant amount of reputation. "I've had some great moments for England and I've had shockers, and he's had some great moments for Australia and he's obviously had a very big shocker in South Africa," Panesar told Radio 5 Live. Ouch.

The crux of Panesar's argument? We all make mistakes. "I made mine on a quiz show, he made his on a cricket field." And you know what? He's got a point. While Smith's quiz show jab might seem like harmless banter, it's hard to ignore the hypocrisy given his own past. Plus, let's be real, who hasn't had a brain-freeze moment under pressure? I certainly have! (Don't ask me about the time I confused the Prime Minister's name on live TV... it still haunts me).

What's particularly interesting is that Smith apparently spent the night before a crucial Ashes Test watching Panesar's Mastermind clips. It's almost… endearing? Or maybe just plain weird. Either way, as Panesar himself noted, it seems to suggest he was a bit rattled by the former bowler's views. Perhaps he just wanted to make sure he knew all the answers to the questions. It is quite amusing, though. This whole saga has definitely added an extra layer of spice to the Ashes series. England fans, are you as riled up as I am?

Panesar did express surprise at Smith's response, expecting a more measured reply. He clearly thought that Smith would brush the cheating scandal aside and move on. But by responding in the way he did, the former spinner argues, Smith has just opened himself up to further scrutiny and criticism from the England camp. Game on, I guess. This Ashes series promises to be a cracker, both on and off the field.
