It's always inspiring to hear about people finding their passion and purpose. And in the case of Huy Nguyen, an electrical controls engineer at NASA's Stennis Space Center, that passion seems to have been simmering since childhood. Growing up in New Orleans, the dinner table wasn't just for food; it was a launchpad for conversations about rocket engines and the wonders of spaceflight. Both his parents worked at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility, and those early discussions clearly planted a seed.
“They both created a household that allowed me to be curious and to be a problem solver,” Nguyen recalls. Fast forward to today, and he's applying that very same curiosity and problem-solving mindset at Stennis, contributing to NASA's ambitious Artemis program. This program, of course, aims to send astronauts back to the Moon and lay the groundwork for future human exploration of Mars. Talk about a legacy!
So, what exactly does an electrical controls engineer do in the grand scheme of sending humans back to the moon? Well, Nguyen is in charge of the propulsion testing support areas, specifically the High Pressure Gas Facility and the High Pressure Industrial Water Facility. These, he explains, are essentially "the heart and powerhouse of testing.” His job is to keep these facilities running smoothly, which presents a couple of interesting challenges.
First, there's the task of maintaining older, "legacy" systems. Finding replacement parts for these can be like searching for a needle in a haystack. Then, there's the exciting challenge of modernizing these systems with robust control systems that allow for better monitoring and maintenance. It's a delicate dance between the old and the new, something that clearly energizes Nguyen.
One of the highlights of Nguyen's NASA career so far was the successful Green Run test series at Stennis. This crucial series validated the first Space Launch System (SLS) core stage for the Artemis I test flight around the Moon. As the engineer overseeing controls operations for the High Pressure Gas Facility and High Pressure Industrial Water Facility, Nguyen played a critical role in ensuring everything ran like clockwork, supplying the helium, nitrogen, air, and water needed for the SLS core stage testing.
“It was a lot of work to set it up and then run it around the clock for 24 hours,” he remembers. The scale of the operation sounds almost unbelievable: multiple systems operating in perfect harmony for an entire day, providing everything the massive SLS core stage needed for a sitewide stress test. "Seeing everyone focused on a single goal like that was truly amazing," Nguyen said, a testament to the collaborative spirit at NASA and the dedication of its engineers. It’s stories like these that remind you of the sheer ingenuity and hard work that goes into pushing the boundaries of human exploration.
