Good news for fans of brutal, beautiful animation! Adult Swim has officially announced the return of Genndy Tartakovsky's *Primal* for a third season. Mark your calendars, folks, because the caveman and dinosaur carnage resumes on Sunday, January 11th at 11:30 PM on Adult Swim. And for those of us who've fully embraced the streaming life, it'll be available on HBO Max the very next day.
Primal Fans Rejoice! Season 3 Release Date Just Dr...
Now, if you're anything like me, you were probably reeling after the end of Season 2. I won't spoil anything for those who haven't seen it, but let's just say Tartakovsky isn't afraid to make some *bold* choices. So, the fact that we're getting a third season at all is something of a pleasant surprise, to say the least. The show had a great run as it was, so it really felt like it was over, personally.
Apparently, Tartakovsky himself wasn't initially planning on continuing the story. In a statement released by Adult Swim, he said, "After two seasons, I was ready to move on until an idea surfaced that was pulpier, bad-ass, and undeniable. Everyone agreed and Season 3 was born.” Colour me intrigued. It takes a pretty compelling pitch to bring a creative mind back to a project they thought was finished, so now I'm dying to see what "pulpier, bad-ass, and undeniable" really entails.
And let's not forget the incredible talent behind the scenes. Beyond Tartakovsky's vision, we've got the art direction of Scott Wills (who also worked on *Samurai Jack* and *Ren & Stimpy*!), and the musical brilliance of Tyler Bates and Joanne Higginbottom. That's a powerhouse team right there, and their combined efforts are a huge part of what makes *Primal* so unique and captivating. The sound design, handled by Joel Valentine, is equally crucial; the visceral roars and grunts really sell the prehistoric setting.
Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, seems just as excited as the rest of us. "I mean, not everyone can kill off their main character and then go ‘on second thought…’ and pull it off!" he joked. He then went on to add, "But Genndy tends to not make things easy for himself, and what we get as a result is a season three that is more bonkers than the decision to kill Spear off in the first place! You thought there was emotion to the main character dying in season two, wait till you see what’s in store for season three.” I'm not sure if I should be terrified or hyped, but either way, January 11th can't come soon enough.
A first-look teaser was shown at New York Comic Con, and while I won't describe it here, do yourself a favor and find it online! If the teaser is anything to go by, Season 3 is going to be a wild ride. Get ready for more intense action, breathtaking visuals, and a whole lot of primal screams.
