Donald Trump's ongoing feud with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel reached a fever pitch this week, with the former president once again demanding ABC pull Kimmel from the airwaves. The source of Trump's ire? Kimmel's pointed jokes referencing Jeffrey Epstein and, naturally, Trump himself.
Trump Demands Kimmel's Firing! Epstein Jokes Spark...
In a late-night Truth Social post, timestamped at 12:49 a.m. ET (because, let's be honest, what else is he doing?), Trump didn't mince words. "Why does ABC Fake News keep Jimmy Kimmel, a man with NO TALENT and VERY POOR TELEVISION RATINGS, on the air?" he blasted. He continued, questioning why TV syndicates "put up with it" and decrying "totally biased coverage" before delivering the signature Trumpian punchline: "Get the bum off the air!!!"
While Trump's post didn't specifically mention which Kimmel monologue triggered the outburst, it's widely believed to be connected to Kimmel's recent jabs regarding Republican loyalty to Trump amidst the ongoing legal battles. Kimmel quipped, "They don't know what is in those files. They are taking his word for it. They are taking the word of someone who paid a porn star $130,000 and claims he didn’t do anything with her.” Ouch. He didn't stop there, adding, “This group is so cartoonishly evil, we might actually need Austin Powers to defeat them.”
This isn't the first time Trump has targeted Kimmel. The two have traded barbs for years, with Trump frequently criticizing Kimmel's comedic style and perceived political bias. Kimmel, of course, rarely misses an opportunity to satirize Trump's pronouncements and actions. This latest escalation, however, feels different, perhaps fueled by the increased scrutiny surrounding Trump's past associations. I mean, we all remember the Access Hollywood tape. It’s easy to see why Trump might be feeling a little sensitive these days.
It remains to be seen whether Trump's renewed attacks will have any impact on ABC's programming decisions. Kimmel's show, despite sometimes fluctuating ratings, remains a fixture of late-night television, and ABC has shown no signs of caving to Trump's demands in the past. For now, it seems the feud is set to continue, providing plenty of fodder for future monologues and, undoubtedly, more late-night Truth Social posts.
One thing is for sure, late night has suddenly become a lot more interesting again.
