Hold on a minute, Claudia Winkleman fans! The queen of fringe and tartan might never have graced our screens as the host of BBC's 'The Traitors' if things had gone a little differently behind the scenes. Turns out, Alan Cumming, the wonderfully eccentric host of the U.S. version, was the *original* choice for the UK gig.
Alan Cumming "Traitors" Shock: Why He Turned Down ...
This juicy bit of information comes straight from BBC Chief Content Officer Kate Phillips. Speaking on the "Rest is Entertainment" podcast, she confessed that Cumming was their first pick. "Alan Cumming had been signed to do the American one, so I thought that Alan was known here as a popular Scottish actor," Phillips explained. "Full disclosure, we did ask Alan if he would do it, but he couldn’t do our dates." Timing, as they say, is everything. Can you imagine the show with Cumming's unique brand of mischievous charm? It’s a tantalizing thought.
Interestingly, the initial plan was to film both the UK and U.S. versions in Costa Rica! Talk about a logistical nightmare averted. Thankfully, the BBC's commitment to producing within the UK meant that Scotland's stunning Ardross Castle became the iconic backdrop we all know and love. It's hard to imagine the show anywhere else now, really. The castle practically *is* 'The Traitors' at this point.
The show, based on the Dutch format "Der Verrades," has become a global phenomenon. The premise is simple, yet utterly addictive: a group of contestants, some secretly designated as "Traitors," must outwit each other in a psychological game of cat and mouse. The "Faithful" try to sniff out the traitors before it's too late for them! The UK version has been a massive ratings hit, and the U.S. edition has even snagged Emmys. The recent celebrity version in the UK? A whopping 11 million viewers tuned in for the finale. That's some serious water cooler buzz.
Phillips also touched on the immense pressure on BBC Studios, particularly the "Strictly" production team. Apparently, churning out two shows a week leaves little time for screen tests and chemistry reads for other projects. "We’ve got time [after the season finishes], so I don’t think we will be looking at it until the New Year, as we want to deliver a great Strictly series," she stated. "Having said that, my inbox has been inundated. It is two of the best gigs in television.”
But Phillips made it clear that the BBC welcomes scrutiny, but also deserves support in its mission to be the best broadcaster in the world. So, while we might daydream about what could have been with Alan Cumming at the helm, let's raise a glass (or a goblet of poisoned chalice) to Claudia Winkleman for making 'The Traitors' her own. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to rewatch the latest episode and try to figure out who the Traitors are... again.
