The 35-year-old suspect, who arrived in Thailand on October 30th via Phuket Airport, was taken into custody earlier this month at his hotel. He's currently being held in Bangkok, awaiting potential extradition to the United States. While Thai police have not officially released the suspect's name, Russian state media, Russia Today, identified him as Denis Obrezko, hailing from Stavropol, Russia. Apparently his relatives confirmed the arrest, which occurred on November 6th, and have stated their intent to fight the extradition. That's not entirely unexpected, of course.

Interestingly, both the U.S. Department of Justice and the State Department have declined to comment on the possible extradition or provide additional details regarding the case. This silence is fairly typical in these types of sensitive international legal matters, I've found. Same goes for American officials in Thailand, who remained tight-lipped. The Russian Foreign Ministry and embassy in Thailand also haven't responded to requests for comment.

However, Yegor Ivanov, Russia's consul general in Phuket, confirmed to Russia's Tass news agency that the consulate was notified of the arrest of a Russian citizen accused of committing an IT crime. He noted the suspect was moved to Bangkok the same day he was arrested. Further, Ilya Ilyin, from the Russian embassy in Thailand, told Tass that embassy staff visited the suspect in prison. The embassy is also reportedly facilitating meetings between the suspect and his family. It's good to see the proper consular procedures being followed, no matter what someone is accused of.

Thailand's Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau stated that the arrest was made possible by an FBI tip, identifying the suspect as a "world-class hacker" traveling to Thailand. During the raid on his Phuket hotel room, authorities seized laptops, mobile phones, and digital wallets. The FBI was present during the arrest, further indicating the level of international cooperation involved. The formal request for extradition has been submitted, but the timeline for the process remains unclear at this time.
