Well, this is a bummer. Avalanche Studios, the folks behind the explosive "Just Cause" series, have officially closed their Liverpool studio. The news follows the cancellation of "Contraband," a highly anticipated Xbox exclusive, earlier this year. It’s always tough to see studios shut down, and this one hits particularly hard given the promise "Contraband" held.
Avalanche Studio Shuts Down! What Does This Mean f...
Avalanche announced the potential closure with what they termed a rather corporate-sounding "collective consultation process" back in September. Now, unfortunately, that process has concluded with the studio's doors closing for good. The shutdown has resulted in the layoff of 31 employees. My heart goes out to everyone affected; losing your job is never easy, especially in a creative field.
In a statement, Avalanche expressed gratitude for the team’s contributions, saying, "We are truly grateful for the dedication and invaluable contributions to Avalanche Studios Group. Our focus remains on supporting the Avelanchers through this transition and to carry on making great games for our player communities." It's a standard PR statement, sure, but hopefully, they're truly providing meaningful support to those who lost their jobs.
"Contraband," for those who might have forgotten, was unveiled back in June 2021 at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase. It sounded pretty cool: a 1970s co-op open-world heist game set in a fictional Southeast Asian locale called Bayan. Think "Just Cause" meets "Miami Vice," but with a Southeast Asian twist. Avalanche was clearly excited about it back then. "With Contraband, we're taking everything we've learned from 18 years of being in the forefront of open world games as well as bringing the knowledge from running successful live game services focusing on our player communities," they said at the time. What a difference a few years can make, eh?
The cancellation of "Contraband" is definitely a blow, and the subsequent studio closure feels like a double whammy. It also raises some questions about Microsoft's overall strategy. Despite the closure, Microsoft's CEO has stated that "Microsoft is thriving" as the company emphasized its focus on other areas. It appears they are shifting their priorities, though whether that's good for gamers in the long run remains to be seen. It’s always a gamble, and sometimes those gambles just don’t pay off. Ultimately, you feel for the developers who poured their heart and soul into a project that will now never see the light of day.
