Working Title, the powerhouse behind iconic rom-coms like *Bridget Jones's Diary*, *Notting Hill*, and *Love Actually*, is at it again. They've just optioned the film rights to Bolu Babalola's delightful novel, *Honey and Spice*. This could be the next big thing, folks. And get this – Babalola herself is penning the screenplay. Talk about a dream come true!
Honey And Spice Film Rights Sold: What Will Happen...
For Babalola, this marks her feature film screenwriting debut. She’s no stranger to writing, though. Her TV pilot, *Big Age*, which she created, wrote, and executive-produced, aired on Channel 4 a couple of years back. But a big-screen adaptation? That's a whole other level. She’s certainly got the chops, given her successful short story collection *Love In Colour* became a Times bestseller and was even shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year. Plus, her latest novel, *Sweet Heat*, just hit shelves this summer, proving she’s a writing machine.
What's *Honey and Spice* even about, you ask? Well, I haven't personally read it yet (it's on my list!), but the buzz is that it's a smart, funny, and heartwarming take on modern love, with a distinctly British Nigerian flavour. It's exactly the kind of fresh perspective that the rom-com genre needs right now. We've seen the same tropes rehashed over and over, so a new voice like Babalola's is incredibly exciting.
Amelia Granger, Head of Film and Television at Working Title Films, seems to agree. She stated, "We’re always on the lookout for the next generation of storytellers who can reinvent the romantic comedy for audiences of every age. We knew we couldn’t miss this opportunity to work with Bolu, a talented writer every bit in the ascendancy, and who has created these wonderful characters who we just want to watch falling in love." It sounds like they're genuinely passionate about this project, and that makes all the difference.
Honestly, I'm already picturing the cast, the soundtrack, the inevitable "meet-cute" scene that will have everyone swooning. Working Title has a knack for capturing those perfect rom-com moments, and with Babalola's writing at the helm, *Honey and Spice* has the potential to be something truly special. I, for one, am eagerly anticipating this one. Fingers crossed for a release date soon!
