Half-Life 3 Hype Reboots: Is the Internet Right This Time?

Half-Life 3 Hype Reboots: Is the Internet Right This Time?
Gaming News 19 November 2025

Why Is Everyone Posting About a Half-Life 3 Announcement Soon?

Alright, folks, let's talk about it. "Half-Life 3." I know, I know. The very phrase is practically a meme, a punchline older than some of the gamers currently demanding its existence. It's the game that exists only in our collective, desperate imaginations, a digital unicorn trotted out whenever Valve does, well, anything. It's the one game we've all given up on and yet, inexplicably, here we are again.

Half-Life 3 Hype Reboots: Is the Internet Right Th...

Because suddenly, *everyone* seems to think it's happening. Like, imminently. You've probably seen the tweets, the memes, maybe even a few folks who’ve apparently lost their grip on reality entirely. I saw a guy on Reddit claiming Gabe Newell personally delivered him a signed copy... yeah, right. So, what gives? Why this sudden surge of (often ironic, but sometimes disturbingly sincere) Half-Life 3 hype?

Well, the rumors have been simmering

Well, the rumors have been simmering for years, of course. Ever since Half-Life 2 ended on *that* cliffhanger. But the past couple of years have seen a slow drip-feed of intriguing little developments that have convinced some (myself included, on a good day) that Valve is, in fact, cooking *something* up.

Remember the Half-Life: Alyx team saying they wanted to do more Half-Life? That wasn't nothing. And that "Final Hours" documentary actually *confirmed* that Half-Life 3 was in development at one point, way back between 2013 and 2014. It's old news, but it's important.

But the real fuel for this latest firestorm comes from the datamining community. These folks are digital archaeologists, sifting through the code of various Valve releases and unearthing tantalizing little crumbs. They've supposedly found evidence of an in-development project internally called "HLX," built on the Source 2 engine. The kicker? They claim it's a full-fledged, non-VR Half-Life game, in development since at least 2021, if not earlier.

Then there was the (possible) slip-up

Then there was the (possible) slip-up by a voice actor earlier this year, who referred to a project called "Project White Sands." Could this be HLX? It's speculation, sure, but intriguing nonetheless.

And let's not forget the *utterly bizarre* Geoff Keighley saga. G-Man's voice actor teasing "unexpected surprises" in 2025, prompting a wild goose chase through album covers and the number 197? Please. *But*… and here's where it gets fun…Keighley himself posted a screenshot showing he had one game on his Steam wishlist. When pressed, he coyly responded with an eyes emoji, then revealed... Dadlympics. Right. Then, he conveniently added *only* "Dadlympics" on the very day he showed us the screenshot. Hiding something, Geoff?

Look, I'm a cynical old journalist, I've seen this hype cycle play out countless times. But something feels different this time. There's a tangible buzz in the air, a confluence of breadcrumbs that, when put together, start to resemble… well, a faint outline of Half-Life 3. Am I getting my hopes up? Probably. Will I be utterly crushed if nothing happens? Almost certainly. But hey, a man can dream, right? And in the meantime, I'll be refreshing Twitter, just in case.
