MGM+ Shakes Up Global Leadership: Wright Takes the Helm as McIvor Departs
The streaming landscape is constantly shifting, and MGM+ is the latest to see significant movement. Michael Wright, a veteran of the company, has just been named Global Head of MGM+, effectively taking control of both U.S. and international operations. This comes as Josh McIvor, the previous global general manager, announces his exit.
Wright Takes the Reins at MGM+ After McIvor Steps ...
McIvor, who only stepped into the global GM role last year, isn't disappearing into the ether, though. According to a memo obtained by Deadline, he's planning to take a much-deserved break to focus on family and "pursuing some interests that don’t stream." Honestly, after years in the trenches of streaming wars, who can blame him? He joined Amazon back in 2013 and played a crucial role in Prime Video’s international expansion, particularly in South-East Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, focusing on local content – a strategy that's proven vital for global success.
So, what does Wright's ascension mean for MGM+
So, what does Wright's ascension mean for MGM+? Well, he's certainly no stranger to the company, having joined back in 2017. Now, he'll be tasked with unifying the U.S. and international programming and marketing teams under a single, cohesive vision. This move follows Jay Marine's promotion in August, with Wright now reporting to Ryan Pirozzi, Head of Channels for Prime Video. It feels like Amazon is really tightening its grip on its streaming assets.
Wright has already begun to shape his team. Adrian Montfalcon will step into the role of Global GM, overseeing strategy, planning, research, and partnerships. Several key players will report to Montfalcon, including Rahul Menon, Adeline Lassince, Lena Hu, Maria-Evengelica Telfort, and Alex Mason. On the marketing front, Kelly Hughes will expand her role to become the global head of marketing, managing both U.S. and international teams. Michael Katzer will continue as Head of International, now also responsible for global content acquisitions and programming.
In a memo, Wright outlined his vision: “Our vision is simple: to unite MGM+ globally… We are a small but mighty team, known for our ability to be nimble and focused.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration and leveraging the iconic MGM brand to create a premier service.
The big question is, can Wright pull it off? The streaming wars are only intensifying. MGM+ will need to find a way to cut through the noise. With Wright at the helm, Amazon clearly hopes to streamline operations and create a more unified and competitive streaming service. Only time will tell if this leadership shakeup is the key to unlocking MGM+'s full potential.
