Škoda Elroq Aces Euro NCAP Crash Tests, Joining Enyaq and Octavia in 5-Star Safety Club
Škoda is clearly doing something right. The Czech automaker's brand-new Elroq electric SUV just sailed through Euro NCAP's notoriously rigorous crash tests, earning a coveted 5-star safety rating. And, not only that, but the existing Enyaq SUV and the ever-popular Octavia have successfully defended their 5-star ratings, earned in previous years.
Škoda Elroq Aces Safety Tests, Earning Top Marks
For those unfamiliar, Euro NCAP is basically the gold standard in Europe when it comes to crash safety. It's a consortium pulling together transport ministries, auto clubs, insurance groups, and research institutes, and they don't pull any punches. Their tests are comprehensive, covering everything from adult and child occupant protection to how well a car protects pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. They even scrutinize active safety systems – the tech that helps prevent accidents in the first place.
The Elroq really shone in the
The Elroq really shone in the Adult Occupant Protection category, racking up an impressive 90% score. This factors in front and side crash tests, whiplash protection in a rear-end collision, and even the effectiveness of the multi-collision brake, which automatically applies the brakes after an initial impact to prevent further crashes – a feature I’m always glad to see included.
Child safety was another strong point, with the Elroq scoring 87%. Euro NCAP reported extremely low forces measured on child dummies during both front and side impacts, and the car earned top marks for compatibility with various child seats and ease of installation.
The "Vulnerable Road User" category, encompassing pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, saw the Elroq achieve a 77% score. The car utilizes a suite of advanced sensors designed to prevent collisions in various scenarios, both day and night. Notably, the new generation door opening warning system helps prevent accidents with cyclists, which, let's face it, are increasingly common, especially in busy urban environments – like we have right here in Istanbul, where I am currently based and where these systems could prevent many accidents.
Finally, the Elroq earned a 78%
Finally, the Elroq earned a 78% score in the "Safety Assist" category, thanks to its emergency braking support, adaptive systems, and lane keeping technologies. The lane keeping assist feature, in particular, earned maximum points.
It's worth noting that Škoda has maintained a 5-star safety rating for every new model they’ve developed since 2008. That’s a pretty remarkable track record. The Enyaq held onto its 5-star result from 2021 despite the increasingly stringent testing criteria that Euro NCAP introduces every three years. And the Octavia has now earned the top rating for the *third* time, after previous tests in 2019 and 2022. This latest rating guarantees that the Octavia will maintain its 5-star safety badge for the next six years.
Euro NCAP has been steadily raising the bar since 2020, aiming to reduce traffic accidents and their impact. And it looks like Škoda is more than up to the challenge.
